Dan Peek of "America"

Any thoughts on Dan Peek? I wasn't of that generation and can tell America wasn't as big a band as others of that era, but I just recently payed attention to "Horse With No Name" and was amazed.

I grew up listening to the tunes of the early 70"s and still love these guys. They were quite successful and you should check out "Tin Man" for a great bass riff that powers the melody perfectly.

I believe Joe Osborn played on "Horse With No Name" and on most of the America recordings.

Joe wasn't on "Horse With No Name". The whole first album is the the three guys in America (Dan Peek, Gerry Beckley, and Dewey Bunnell. They alternated who played bass on that album, and it was recorded in London. Dan's the bassist on "Horse...", Gerry's on "I Need You" and "Sandman". Joe Osborn shows up on "Ventura Highghway". They eventually hired a bass player (David Dickey) who I believe also played live with them. When I saw them ca. 1975, the bassist and drummer were part of the opening act, then played with America (which was down to just two of them when I saw them).

As for what I think? I dunno- it was right for the songs, but nothing that grabbed my attention (not a bad thing in itself).

George Martin liked them enought to produce them.
My band opened for them last fall, they invited us onstage for 'Horse'.
When I hear the old hits today I notice how big a role the bass parts played, as many melodic hooks as the guitars I think.

Man, they had a lot of hits!

America (very talented musicians) is one of the most under-rated touring bands over 100 performances a year 2017; they've been together since 1970. Give a listen to "Women Tonight" try playing the bass to that song while singing the lead, fun and a nice little bass riff in the middle.

Someone needs to do a mash-up of America's "Horse With No Name" and Grand Funk Railroad's "Aimless Lady". Trying to sing the bassline in my head to either tune right now I keep devolving to the other one!
