are the necks removable? or are they perminantly attached to the body. cause i was actually planning on buying one, and refinishing it something a little more funky than the amber color.

The newly revised pickups for the Dead-On series sound really good. Full spectrum, warm, punchy, extended, and with a nice focused, very musical overtone structure. I played a long scale dead on '63 and it sounded wonderful. Played very well too.

I plugged it directly into an SWR 1x12. Didn't seem to be lacking in output. Of course if that becomes an issue, you can always get a Tech 21 Bass Driver DI to normalize output of your various basses into your amp.

I recently bought a second hand one, though immaculate. 2009 dead on 58 reissue Made In China, and it is fantastic. Bought it on a whim as I have always played Precisions, but always loved the Longhorn look. Well...it rocks, is so light and comfortable, a great finish (copperburst) and the "souped up" lipstick pickups are excellent. The neck is a superb fit in the neck pocket. Now, for the other stuff - I found it impossible to fully intonate the rosewood bridge no matter how hard I tried, so replaced the bridge with an All Parts Danelectro Longhorn replacement bridge with individual string saddles - problem fixed. The person I purchased it from found the stacked pots (with the chickenhead knobs) were stuffed, so he replaced them with single pots with black knobs (one for volume, one for tone) and had a 3-way pickup selelctor switch installed. This was unsatisfactory for me as you could not balance the volume of the 2 pickups, so I had it rewired making both pots volume controls (one per pickup) and bypassed the selector switch (left it in so there was no hole) and use the tone on my amp (Hartke HA2500 head) which has plenty of tonal control. I love the Longhorn and have quickly adjusted from long scale to short scale neck okay.

They look really retro and unique, but I felt like I was gonna break it in half as soon as I looked at it - I don't know if it actually WAS flimsy, but that's the impression that I got.

i have a 63 reissue in aqua. it is a great bass. i would imagine that the neck on the longhorn has the same type (though different colors) of satin finishing as the 63 reissue, which i love. the neck is so comfortable to play and you don't run into the friction that you would on a gloss neck.

the rosewood bridge can easily be replaced without modification with one of the intonating saddle bridges like those found on the 63 reissue.

another thing that i love about the dano is that the masonite ply construction results in a very resonant acoustic sound for the bass. the instrument just sounds nice by itself...and of course it sounds nice plugged in.
