I don't have a Longhorn but my Dano '63 is a nice sounding bass, and after I shimmed the neck the action is very nice indeed. Lot's of thump with the D'Addario Chromes I put on, and will probably keep on forever.

I liked the 'Dead-On' series better than the second series of re-issues (the ones with the pickup toggle)... Either can be a player... Neither was comparable to the first series RIs (IMO)... And yeah, the Jerry Jones basses are in another league altogether...

I have the one with the pick up toggle and like it better then the dead on ones the wooden bridges dont intonate at all which sucks but other then that that all of em are sweet.

I have a wooden bridge and the intonation is good . There is a sweet spot for it . It took a little finiggelling to get the exact placement for it .

A little off subject, but lots of Squier CV owners would probably agree that Chinese QC can be pretty darn good.

re: the Dead on 58s - I'd agree they were a bit overpriced but they can be found for good deals and I have one and it sounds every bit as good as the original late 50s one I had and the truss rod is a major improvement so I'm glad it wasn't truly "dead on" accurate. Yeah, the tuners suck (and I replaced them) and the pots, etc are pretty much bottom of the line but the bass plays well and the pickup are really good. I've gigged with it without issue. I don't know that I'd use it as a main bass but I'm glad to have it around - I've had no structural problems with it.

I pretty much agree with this take on just about any electric stringed instrument: woodwork (body/neck) = 98% of an instrument's overall appeal. I will swap out everything else that doesn't come up to snuff as necessary. And often things that look bad, like wimpy tuners or caveman bridges, actually end up performing just fine if I keep my mind & ears open.
