re: the Dead on 58s - I'd agree they were a bit overpriced but they can be found for good deals and I have one and it sounds every bit as good as the original late 50s one I had and the truss rod is a major improvement so I'm glad it wasn't truly "dead on" accurate. Yeah, the tuners suck (and I replaced them) and the pots, etc are pretty much bottom of the line but the bass plays well and the pickup are really good. I've gigged with it without issue. I don't know that I'd use it as a main bass but I'm glad to have it around - I've had no structural problems with it.
