There have been five different versions of the Longhorn re-issued . The Pro version that was made in Korea ( 1998-2001 ) had a metal adjustable bridge , and the 2006 Chinese re-issue had one too . The Pro had improved tuners and the 2006 re-issue had a toggle switch . The later re-issues had the wooden bridge and the truss rod adjusted at the headstock . The standard strings for Danos are D'Addario EXL 170 S 45-100 nickel wound . Some people prefer LaBellas . I hope that helps .

Yea i have the one with the toggle switch and thank you for the string recommendations.

I'm still wondering. D'addario makes a Chromes short scale set, but not in the wuss gauges I like. They said they were going to start making a wuss gauge set and never did. And I thought they would start offering a 40 G when they started selling singles, and singles sales started yesterday and they never did that, either. Oh well ;) So if you like wuss gauges, it's either LaBellas or bust from what I can see.

We've talked about this in production meetings and although I've expressed the "interest" so far, production hasn't agreed. I'm not sure what the tipping point will be but i'm still in there swinging!

With just one Dano in my collection right now I'm not interested in being a member of the club but after a year of ownership I finally decided to go over my '56 Single cut bass. This one was made in Korea.

The factory strings were removed for a new set of short scale GHS precision flats (courtest of the classifieds) I spent a little time experimenting with the bridge and it took about 30 minutes of trial and error with the truss rod to get the relief where I wanted it. Let me tell you, I am very impressed with the neck and fret work.

The bridge is a curiosity and you could spend weeks fiddling with the popsicle stick to perfect your intonation but there really is plenty of adjustment available in the design. Now that I've figured it out I can't even imagine a standard style bass bridge on this Dano. It adds to the charm. The action set up very low and the neck is simply great. No fret sprout, no overhang, no ski jump, just flat and even all the way across. I can't get my made in USA Peaveys to go this low and I have spent much more time trying. There is a tiny wooden shim at the body end of the neck pocket about 1/2 the size of a postage stamp and 1-2mm thick. Absolutely no fret buzz or unwanted noise all the way to the 24th fret. The aluminum nut took seconds to file down on the E-A-D strings to even up the lower register for playability and the results are simply astonishing.

I picked this up as a curiosity despite reading complaints that these were a toy, weren't well made, or "gig quality" instruments. I thought it would give me a chance to play a campy short scale at home as I really don't have any interest in another traditional P/J style bass. My guitarist friends spent more time playing it than I have and I was on the fence to sell it pending a Peavey Axcelerator purchase. It took more than a year but after spending the time to bond with this Dano it has found a home for good. What a killer quirky bass for the money.

I guess the tipping point is guaranteeing they can sell a few hundred sets, eh? ;) Well, honestly Don, I can't blame them. It's really easy to say that they'd sell from this side of the desk. If it doesn't happen, though, I'll stick with the XL's in wuss gauges. I think LaBellas will likely come off as sounding too bright and tic-tacky on that bass. Some like that sound and I do too sometimes, but I also like the option of not having it.

Requesting club number.

I've got three of them from the 90's. Love them although I don't play them that much anymore. I have a Longhorn (that I keep flats on) and two Long scale DC basses, one of which is converted to fretless.

I tried the LaBella "dano" flats on my '69 Danelectro but found them WAY too thin. In my opinion you want a heavier gauge string for a short scale bass to counterbalance the lower the tension of the shorter string length. Plus I think a thicker string usually sounds better and a .079 E just feels and sounds ridiculous. Instead I put the standard light guage short scale LaBella flats (.043-.104) on over 10 years ago. They fit perfectly and and the thing is a fat & greasy groove machine. Every time I bring it on gigs or recordings people are usually skeptical but then are blown away by the sound. I also have a late 60s Silvertone 1443. Danos rule!
