Two other Danelectro short scale string options -

D'Addario XL156, "Designed specifically for for use with the Fender Bass VI". Toss out the two skinniest strings and you've got a .044-.056-.072-.084 set. Nickel wound and a little too bright for me, but they did fit my '56 Single cut's bridge and tuners perfectly. Relatively inexpensive too.
Eventually I went with Rotosound RS 77S, .040-.050-.075-.090. Flatwound and bassier than either the LaBella Danelectro strings or the previously-mentioned D'Addarios, and installation isn't a problem.

I've got a Danelectro U-1 Dolphin Nose, like the one pictured here. I accquired this in a trade involving a 10-speed bike. After years of it languishing in the closet, I finally pulled it out and began experimenting. I finally settled on a de-fret job and a good cleaning. I love to use it for the fretless songs, but mostly to piss off our gear-snob drummer. All other equipment in the band is generally in the 1K+ range. I haven't seen any other dolphin noses in this thread, maybe I've overlooked them. Anyway, how about a number?

Spotted a red Danelectro '63 bass (short scale) in my local music store. Used, as is, $199. Was intrigued and plugged it in and played with it for a little bit. Liked it and was considering making them an offer, but then I realized the pickup switch only worked in one of the three positions and got the feeling that the tone control wasn't doing much of anything. Trying to determine if the hardware failings are a relatively easy fix and it is worth more than $125 or so. Anyone have any advice or guidance?

Might just be a loose wire , bad solder joint or faulty switch . Most expensive thing would be replacing a pickup , they are easy to find . Most likely a loose wire or bad joint .

All parts sell original Dano lipsticks for only $40 . But I bet the pickups fine ...
