D'Angelo just released his new album - Black Messiah

I just ordered it.. Looking forward to it!

Just surfing the net, I ran across this (Invalid Link Removed), a Q&A With Russell Elevado who produced/engineered Voodoo (and quite possibly this album as well)... Anyways, he offers some insight into the process of how D'Angelo would come up with the frame of the basslines in a sequencer, and Pino would mimic it and then add his own fills and such. Pretty interesting.

Holy crap. I have not listened extensively to R&B (a fault by my own admission), but the hype surrounding this record and Pino playing on it were enough for me to snag it and my GOODNESS does it groove. I think I blacked out for a minute or two.

I feel that after fourteen years, this CD should not sound like bonus cuts from Voodoo.

i really don't think it sounds anything like voodoo. there is no keyboards for one, they have been replaced with many guitars. the single and the last track sound like they could be more evolved voodoo stuff, but for me the rest sounds pretty different.

and about the 14 year thing, he wasn't recording for the 14 years. he took time off. don't think of it as he waited 14 years of recording to give this. more like he took 10 years off, toured for 2 years and then made the record. that's not fact, but probably more accurate to what happened.

Fair enough, I just think he has taken the behind the beat thing as far as it can go. I would like the vocals to have been recorded more clearly too.

It's growing on me every time I hear it. I fell in love with In another life and Sugah daddy on first pass.
In another life hits me like a classic Chi-Lites or Dramatics tune with the bonus of Pino on it. Now the other tunes
are creeping in more and more. I dig when tunes take awhile to sink in, when everything isn't on the surface.
I dig the production as well, a bit psychedelic at times. Don't expect Voodoo, though there are a few tunes in that vibe,
but if you dig D you'll probably dig it.
