D'Angelo just released his new album - Black Messiah

So, ?uestlove posted at 5pm that the new album would drop at midnight.
And man. This is a heavvvyyy album. I wasn't 100% sold on the single, but hearing this on context, i'm blown away.

Not like his old stuff like voodoo, because it's been 14 years, but man does this groove HARD.

To my ear, D'Angelo pretty much redefined "laid back" with his '95 debut. He lays it back so much that he almost sounds off. But he makes it work.

Listening to the new one right now. Sounds like he's still a fan of "laid back".

Listening to it and stuff like 1000 Deaths actually made me think of Fishbone (more attitude than sound-wise). And lo behold, here's D with Angelo (Moore) jamming through "Black Flowers". It's a tad chaotic, but they're definitely all very much into it. A joy to see. Awesome album, too (Black Messiah). I'm into my fourth listen.

Ha! That's crazy. It's like they lay it back so far, it's practically displaced by a sixteenth. It speaks to ?uestlove's skill that he keeps time so solid while bass/guitar are trying to draaag him back.

There was a great quote from ?uestlove about this album. "For all intents and purposes, this album is the black version of [The Beach Boys'] Smile-- at best, it will go down in the Smile/There's a Riot Goin' On/Miles Davis' On the Corner category. That's what I'm hoping for."

It's a great album. I've been listening to it all day. Amazing dark, deep grooves.

Holy sh*t. This is an instant classic. It's been on repeat all day. Once every decade there's maybe a handful of albums that make me react this way.

Pino, Q-Tip, Questlove, Kendra Foster and James Gadson - it's a joyful challenge to listen to this album - groove heavy and thought heavy.

The iTunes download doesn't have liner notes, but most of the album sounds like Pino and he has quite a few writing credits, according to Wikipedia.

I received my CD copy today. The booklet reads "Bass: Pino Palladino and D'Angelo". However, there is no further break down in terms of the tracks.

Came here to see if anyone was posting about D and Pino's new work. Grooving to the laid back "Sugah Daddy" and "Really Love" tracks in the middle of the album right now! Can't wait to listen to this over and over again like I have been with Voodoo and Brown Sugar the past decade

Thanks. Where'd you buy the CD from? I'm looking online and it seems like Amazon is the only place online that has them, but the Canadian stock is sold out.
