Darkglass 500 v2

New bass player here, I moved to bass after playing guitar for a few years, I love bass! I want to get a Darkglass 500 amp. I play classic rock and hard rock, Sabbath, Hendrix, AIC, STP, that kinda stuff. Of the two 500 watt amps Microtubes and Alpha Omega which one would be best for me?

I would probably go with the Microtubes, as it will give you both the VMT and B3K pedals built in.

I would suggest the Alpha Omega. I own both and the Alpha Omega is capable of a fuzz type distortion like you would hear on classic rock recordings. The Microtubes and B3K engines have a more modern flair. They both sound good at what they do and I think you’d be pleased with either.

Best bet is to check out Amos Heller’s YouTube videos and decide from there. His recordings of the heads are the most in line with how I actually hear them through my cabs.

I went and checked out the videos, listening through my ipad I cant really hear the quality or tones that well. So if I nail it down to bar room 70’s and 80’s classic rock, would it still be the AO ?

IPad speakers won’t really convey the heft of the lows but they do give an idea about tonal differences. If you can pipe your iPad through some good speakers or headphones it would really help for critical listening.

I think either amp would get you there, and I don’t think there is a clear winner. The Microtubes amp is the more versatile of the 2 where the Alpha Omega has a stronger and thicker sounding fuzz tone. The clean side of both amps is very loud and sounds great as well.

What were you planning on using for a cabinet? I think cabinet selection is as important of an aspect for the 70’s and 80’s tone.

Also, there is a lot of great gear out there that would give you what you are after and might even be better for the job. For classic rock tones I would check out an Orange Terror Bass and I would stick with 12 or 15 inch drivers.

I’m glad you love the bass, you came to the right place! It is an addiction and you’ll quickly find that one amp will not do everything you want. I highly suggest checking out the Classifieds here for good deals.
