Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

Watched the DG capture vid @AnthonyBe suggested. I totally got it until dude started explaining the capture processes 🤣

I'll have to watch it again a few times, possibly at a slower speed too 🫣

Anyhoo.. ordered a screen guard from .. get this- Screen Guard. Some guy on FB my buddy sent me a link to. So far so good. Easy to install, magnets are strong but not a pain to remove the cover. Just about $60 and 3 weeks to my doorstep.

New multi fx unit announced by Darkglass this morning.





I would have bought one had it came with an AUX JACK so that you use it practice to songs through YouTube. No auxiliary jack makes it useless for practicing.

I started messing with captures using Tone3000 on Sunday, and it's blowing my mind. Was having latency issues using the sweep signal method, including some digital artifact stuff that was very obvious. Dove in on the wet/dry method, and it's pretty amazing how spot-on they sound for the drive pedals I'm doing.
 
Quite useful for practicing - it's got bluetooth pairing so you can send it any digital audio that you want...
What Graham said + you can use it as an audio interface and practice that way, too.
 
After some weeks of toddling around with my Anagram, it's a keeper. Now, currently using my old SWR 750x -head as a "monitor" amp for the cabinets at the rehearsal shed, side-by-side with IEM's. So 2 outputs in use. Was wondering if I could just get a PA power amp (A/AB-class) when the SWR fries? Would the Anagram alone work as a powerful enough preamp? Didn't find the output level values anywhere, though I'm not even sure where to look. And yes I know that power amps are different, in terms of how high an input level they require to function properly. This could/would make stereo setups easier too, with a 2-channel (why not 4-channel?) power amp and a wide array of huge subwoofers!

Any thoughts?
 
You can input audio through USB or Bluetooth, as @Grahams Groove and @IvanBassist said. No need for an Aux jack.
You can use the return to connect an aux signal. In the preset add a return block to be able to hear the aux signal

Sorry, definitely not mocking the OP, just having fun with the 'missed possibilities' of such a complex and powerful device.

I can appreciate that some people will still want to physically plug in an audio source, that doesn't support BT, via a TRS cable and I think it is great that the Anagram has 3 different ways to support 'play along to' sources. I'm definitely adding this to the F.A.Q. over on Darkglass Anagram Frequently Asked Questions as I'm sure it is something many prospective buys or new users will be thinking about.

Hey all - new user here, signed up specifically to share the following observations, and join the very good discussions on here...
Following up on discussions back in October about gain staging, Entropia sounds and the HL compressor:
The biggest issue I’ve had with Anagram relates to its input gain staging, which doesn’t seem to follow suit with any other device I own, analog or digital. This was my solution, and it may help resolve your Entropia issue. If not, then please disregard.

Anagram has no input gain control, so to dial in the input gain you need to put a gain block early in the chain.

I also had some issues getting to grips with Entropia. Things tended to feel over-compressed, and I struggled to dial a nice non-metal edge-of-breakup tone in. Messing with different drives in Anagram I felt my results are inconsistent and I tried to dive deeper. I now think different drives treat the dry/wet blend knobs and/or clean / processed level knobs differently.

To test this, I put a gain block at the start of the signal chain, kicking the signal to a very hot but juuust not clipping ~ -5dB as indicated by the meter on the left. Next I put different drive blocks, and observed the output levels as indicated by the meter on the right for different settings of the drive block.

I found three main classes of drives:
  • B3K, VMT, AO, Duality Fuzz, Green PiRate Fuzz
    • The clean blend seems to bypass the drive block's model
    • For these drives, the block's level/volume knob did not have an effect on blend full dry. A hot input gives a hot dry output even when the level/volume is turned to zero.
    • The wet output levels at full level/volume knob is hotter than mid-scale and varied a bit between drives, but was lower than my very hot test signal. Around -12dB to -8dB were typical.
    • If you have a very hot signal chain and only a little bit of wet blend going, your signal level changes with blend.
  • Microtubes X, Chinchilla, Atomic Sans, Bee Kolme, Arc Dreamer, Entropia
    • The clean blend seems to be part of the drive block's model
    • The level/volume affects also a full-dry blend, but the details vary a bit between drives:
      • On some drives (eg Chinchilla), the signal on full dry blend had the very hot input signal levels, while the full wet blend was around mid-scale for 12 o'clock volume/level
      • On some drives, the blend had no effect on signal level. Dry/wet and between were both as hot as the hot test signal (eg Atomic Sans, Arc Dreamer), on some the output was around mid-scale at 12 o'clock level knob for a hot input (Bee Kolme)
  • Entropia, Microtubes X
    • These anyway don't have a classic wet/dry bypass, but rather frequency crossovers that can let some signal bypass. These more complex bypasses will do ..."something"... with hot signals. Hard to determine.
Also, it seems this behaviour of the drive blocks actually changed a bit over the various firmware updates. Eg my notes from my first tests on version 1.8 put the PiRate into the second class together with eg Chinchilla, rechecking this on 1.9 while writing this post puts it clearly into the first class with eg Duality. So ymmv.

Now: what to do with this?
I think it shows it's important to understand gain staging best practices within the Anagram. I presume the models are optimised to ~mid scale levels, since many gravitate to this as output level when left to defaults. So probably it's good practice to place a gain block at the start to achieve this (until Darkglass gives us a global input level setting...).
Also, adding gain blocks to boost the level in front of some block to achieve a certain effect will probably lead to unpredictable results for different blocks, and maybe also between firmware updates.

Maybe @IvanBassist, this would be a good topic to explain in a deep-dive video?

Sorry. Was about to catch a flight while writing that message.

We test all blocks, not only drives, with several different basses, from low output P and J-basses to hot output Dingwalls and Spectors + the different basses that our beta tester team has. All the blocks are optimized to function with a wide range of levels.

With that being said, just like a physical pedal, if your bass is very quiet and you couple that with a very soft plucking/picking hand attack, you probably will need a volume boost to get a more distortion.

We haven't changed the behavior of any of the drives with the latest updates.
 
Anyone else have problems with the Anagram freezing where the UI still works but it doesn't process audio at all until you restart it? When this happens the input and output meters no longer respond and there's no output obviously. Switching presets also isn't enough to get it working again, only unplugging the power works.

I've been playing with it for ~1 week and it has frozen like that at least once every time I've used it.

It also momentarily freezes playback while recording, so if I'm playing along to an EZ Drummer track, the drums freeze for maybe half a second or more and then I'm way out of time.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to return it. It's a shame because Entropia and NAM profiles sound amazing, and the UI is very well designed, but the unit needs to actually work.

I concur that they act the same individually. However stacking drives is a different story. I can't get the same results from stacking drives in my Anagram compared to the physical counterparts I own. I get there may be a technical reason for this and it's not the end of the world but it would have been nice to have those results be the same. Maybe in an update somewhere down the line it can get there on this particular point.

We are releasing a patch soon for the freezes that some users are experiencing and will continue to monitor the issue.
To help us investigate further, could you provide the following information?

  • What OS version are you using?
  • Were you interacting with Anagram when the freeze happened and what were you doing?
  • What mode and view or menu were you in?
  • Did you have USB connected and was it for USB audio, Suite or power?
  • Did you have bluetooth audio streaming?
  • What was the preset like that you were using?
  • Was the touch screen, pots and footswitches still responsive even though audio and level meters froze?

As for recording, how have you configured the buffer size on your DAW?
