Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

well, now there's this little package of goodness for me to dig into. Thanks to @rstephens for meeting me before a gig to do a deal for his Anagram and accessories. I need to start digging into this little package of goodies to see how to best use it for my live work. I'm intending for it to replace a series of pedals on my small board (metro 20), and as I set it on the board initially, I see how I could potentially move to an even smaller board.

The sale included the Mwave Midi pedal extension and a D'Addario USB power bank. I'm thinking the extra Midi pedals may come in handy, but given I'm planning on putting the Anagram on my current board, I'm not sure the USB power bank will come into play.

Hmmm, what to do first ??

Here's how I expect to place it on my current Metro 20 with a Cali76 in front and Noble last

Is Anagram Answers the un-official official Darkglass Anagram forum? Does Darkglass look at those wishlists and incorporate them in their roadmap?
Hi Warp, I started and run AA. There's no relationship between the site and Darkglass at this time, but we do *hope* that they see it as a valuable community resource and take a look at what's going on there. It's been growing steadily and is up to 160 users or so this week. I've been trying to stay out of the way and just let it grow organically, but I am planning a couple of promos coming up with some giveaways. I have extend a lot of gratitude to @AnthonyBe, who has no stake in the site, for his dedication to creating useful content on it regularly and helping it become the resource it is at this time. 🙏🏻 to Anthony! I love TB but this thread's size is what gave me the idea to start AA... Discreet topics and conversations, to me, are much easier to parse and search than (checks pagination...) 136 pages in one thread, and multiple FB groups. All of them are useful in their own way.

So, use one or all of these great resources. Some people don't have or use FB. Some do all their bass discussion and research on TB. Some may prefer the format of AA. We're aiming to be a great community resource, not at the expense of other sites, but to the benefit of those who like the format. I'm always up for suggestions so fire away (on AA in the Website Help & Feature Requests forum). I'd love to hear how AA can do more for the community.

For now, I'm about to pack up the truck with my Angram and its last hoorah with my Laney FRFR cabinet... I have a SD Powerstage 700 and EBS 2x12 cabinet in transit to replace it. Football all day, dive bar gig tonight featuring 8 different presets on my Anagram! I love the 80s!

Thanks to all.

Interested to know if Anagram users are using any preamp/DI after the Anagram. I think I have seen some pics on this thread like that. I also think I saw @IvanBassist using a Sushibox as the last box, along with a Cali76CB in front of the Anagram.

Oh I can answer this one…… the anagram doesn’t fill a board…… so one must fill a board, regardless of if it’s needed, adds value or is expensive. A board must not contain any spaces unless something is still in the mail.

This is the TB way

as a newb, is there something I should do right off the bat with a new/used unit ? I'm going to plug it in by itself this afternoon and just play around with it a bit. I think the seller told me it has all the software updates other the very last point release.

ha! nice one. well I'm already planning on running the Anagram with the Cali76 in front and the Noble on the output side, so there's that.
I'm just diving into the box this afternoon, so I'll have to see how it sounds before I make any real config decisions.

Well the software updates are free, don’t require registration and take 5 minutes so it’s not a selling point really.

But plug it into your computer and update it if it needs, it’s a really simple process.

Whilst you’re at it you can load a bunch of nams from Tone3000.net on to it

@IvanBassist’s B15 is a great one

I use mine standalone doing everything my board was, I have a midi controller on order but that’s mainly for convenience at home to have it on the desk and control it still from the floor.

Sure it’ll be nice with a noble and cali

If using compressor with the Anagram, should it be placed before the Anagram or into the FX loop?
Adding to @TonalSYNTHesis above question..

What are you using the Compressor for? 'Conventional' uses tend to be:
1. At the start of the signal chain to tidy up dynamics before we start to apply effects but some might like to have a Preamp before it.
2. At the end of the chain as a more gentle 'bus compression'
For point 1. above you could either have your outboard compressor before the Anagram in the signal chain, or in the FX Loop but used early in the Anagram signal chain.
For point 2. above you could either have your outboard compressor after the Anagram in the signal chain, or in the FX Loop but used late in the Anagram signal chain (maybe with a cabinet as the last block?).

Play around and see what sounds you like :)

I'll just chime in here after about 2 hours with the Anagram, it's A LOT to absorb! Particularly for a multiFX newb like me. Lots of good/great sounds (at least through headphones), lots I will never ever use, lots for me to work out to make this a meaningful part of my live work. I'm going to have to understand the primary modes (preset, stomp, scene) way better than I do now. I also have the Mwave Midi footswitch that may come into play, but I have to wrestle out some basic working signal chains first.

Guess I'm going to have to RTFM ;)

I have the Anagram Manual PDF sitting on my desktop :) Although, these days it is usually so I can copy & paste a screenshot and page number into a reply to a question on socials for people that don't (or are too lazy to) RTFM ;)

Welcome and Congrats!

So, aside from the manual, and this thread, here are my recommendations:
1. https://www.talkbass.com/wiki/darkglass-anagram/ - Just bookmark this, lots of reference stuff, and links to useful things.
2. YouTube videos - - the Darkglass Anagram YouTube video playlist is just full of great topics in bite-sized chunks.
3. Anagram Answers - lots of knowledge collected for easy access.

It depends on which blocks you’re using. The FX loop adds 3 ms of latency, so it’s better to place the compressor before the device.

That’s why I’d avoid a hardware compressor: I need it after a pitch-shifter block, and I don’t want the extra 3 ms of latency.

3ms is inaudible. If the signal chain was up around 7ms already and the 3ms pushed it to 10ms it could be a concern, but if you’re just using the Anagram plus a compressor the inclusion of 3ms is a complete non-issue.

We can also add a wireless system, and good popular units have around 4.5 ms of latency. If an FFT pitch shifter is used, that adds another 9 to 15 ms (I don’t know how fast it is in the Anagram yet, since I haven’t bought it). If there’s no pitch shifter, we can add a monitoring system, which is another 5 ms or more.

I think the broader takeaway here is that 5ms of latency is more or less what it takes for sound to travel from your amp to your ears ~6ft away. On most stages you’ll stand further than that away from the snare drum.

To Silky‘s point… some of this will matter more depending on whether it is the first 3ms or a later 3ms that pushes you into noticeable ranges.

FWIW, I have a GLXD16+ in front of my Anagram with the FX loop, the pitch shifter, and one of the sub-octave patches active in one of my presets and the latency is still a non-issue.

Something that many people seem to completely ignore is to go over the tutorial that pops up when you boot up the unit for the 1st time.

Since you bought it 2nd hand, you can revisit it by tapping the three dots on the top right corner and then tapping on tutorial :)

If you buy 2nd hand, you can ask the previous owner to make a transfer to the email you have linked to the MyPedal platform

Hey @IvanBassist, I've just noticed the following on p89 of the Anagram manual:
Warranty
Please register for your warranty at Darkglass MyPedal. Anagram is under warranty to the
original owner for a period of two years against manufacturing defects in the country where the
product was originally purchased.
This caught my eye - "Anagram is under warranty to the original owner ..."
So this would indicate that even if you purchase a 2nd hand/used Anagram that is still under warranty, it makes no difference if the original owner transfers the registration as the new owner can technically be refused warranty service by Darkglass.

And before anyone says "oh yeah, but Darkglass are nice folks they wouldn't do that.." - while I agree with the sentiment, the warranty legal statement is pretty clear and gives them the legal right to refuse warranty claims for anyone that is not the original owner.

So, with that being the case, why even bother transferring registration?

Registering a unit allows for easier access to information in case there is any possible issue showing up requiring our assistance. We recommend registering a unit when it is purchased as an additional indication of the warranty period.

In addition, in case of potential theft/loss, we can track down inquiries for registrations based on the serial number if someone else tries to register the same unit.
