Darkglass Anagram Multi FX Announced

It has everything I use in my Stomp. The Stomp has more audio channels over USB, but I do not use more than 2 anyway. If an iPad app comes out to control the thing and someone confirms that you can adjust the volume of incoming USB audio, I am in.

Edit: the app might already be there, just waiting for an update to support the Anagram

I'm sure it will go up as you add additional layers of heavy processing, but assuming 1.3ms is a common use case average it is a completely inconsequential amount. It's the equivalent of being about one foot away from a speaker, and at that rate will be inaudible to humans.

What's the range where the average person starts to detect differences from playing or the 'originating event'? Maybe 5-10 ms?

This will fit on a Nano with a wireless. It's bass centric, so I don't have to scroll through 252 guitar amps to get to the four bass amps if the other modeler even has that many. Good display, touch screen and easy to program without being hooked up to a laptop. It sounds good. The only downside I'm seeing is that $1200 is higher than I would have guessed, so it might take me a day or two to "justify" it.
 
I see that Nate Navarro has a demo vid out too. The more I see of it the more I want one, but I can't justify that kind of money for a pedal anytime soon....



I think that price point being reasonable really depends on how much it can replace. If it could replace 75%+ of my current board, I would save money and space using one of these.

This really depends on context. For musicians it tends to be a bigger issue the more you subdivide notes. Latency will be much worse for a drummer regularly playing 16th notes than for a bassist who might be sticking to quarter notes.

Very skilled drummers maybe. The average person won't notice latency in the single digit range and even 15ms is debatable for seasoned musicians (not average person).

Personally, I don't even think about latency if the whole signal chain doesn't add up to 10ms and I try to avoid higher numbers as modern venues usually are set up with digital mixing desks and the PA amplifiers also have DSP and considerable amounts of latency. When you're getting your stage monitors fed from that you can easily reach 30ms total latency when you have a digital pedal board, digital wireless unit etc.

Most people don't even think about the PA stuff and don't even notice it lol

Having delayed signal in parallel with non-delayed is a whole different story though. You can easily test this if your USB-interface has a direct monitoring control. When you use software monitoring via DAW and direct monitoring simultaneously it's pretty easy to detect even small amounts of latency due to comb filter effects being present. This is why I usually don't use FX loops in digital multi effects for parallel processing. Also the reason why the pre-DI output on the darkglass amps is using a digital audio signal since that is being artificially delayed to be in sync with the signal that has the IR on it. The IR loaded Aguilar amps however don't use the same approach interestingly enough...


Anecdote: I once had a pedalboard consisting of several source audio pedals, an HX effects (the HX and the pedals were wired in a rather complex loop-in loop-in loop setup where each device was basically in the loop of another so even with just a few pedals I had every single input used up), G30 wireless and two notes CAB M+ and measured the overall latency to be ~11ms.

I ran into a similar issue running two Digitech Ricochets in series. When both were in momentary mode the combined latency felt like someone else was playing the instrument.

@Ratterbass_ really nailed it. People make a big deal about it, but for non-parallel signals it’s much more tolerable than you’d think. I read a study a while back that states the human limit of perception is around 8ms, and that’s right at the absolute limit in a controlled environment. I’ve seen people here on TB and the occasional YouTuber complain about 3-5ms of latency, but I’ve never seen them put it to the test and do any sort of blind testing to see if they can truly distinguish latency at that level. I sincerely doubt they could.

And yet, the attack values of compressors fall right into that range and fiddling with attack knobs has impact on the perceived sound.

I don't know. I am not tech savvy. But I would rather avoid a signal chain that messes with my timing. It is bad enough as is :D
