DarkStar Pick Ups

I did three by myself. Two are installed ina Peavey T40, the next will go in the Berry Oakley tribute that I am finishing now

He is definitely NOT reliable in my experience either.

It's just a theory, but I believe he has a couple of people or himself posting these phony, misleading, rumors about still being in business...every time I try & call there's no answer, same thing with emails & I've heard the same thing from the overwhelming majority of people in these parts...not sure what the deal is with this guy

That makes sense since Turner is the guy that modded the original Hagstrom pickups used by Lesh and Casady. The Darkstars used an extra magnet, which was one of Turners mods.

For anyone here who doesn't know who Rick Turner is, he designed the Alembic basses and pickups, having hand wound the pickups on the early Alembic basses.

Just sent Gibson ripper electronics to Curtis Novak as the pups were dead. one of his options to me was the to stuff the casing with his "Bisonic pups" which i am guessing will look more like p-90 due to the size. Obviously thats what i chose. I will let you all know as we move along. fingers crossed. Heres hoping they sound like my 3 DS pups. ripper with bisonics may actually ease my old starfire GAS. My Dearmond doesn't....

Well, it was Rick AND Ron Wickersham..

Yes, Ron did the electronics, a very important part, but Rick hand wound the pickups and did the woodworking and design on the basses.

George Munday did the electronics on Phil Lesh's first Alembic.

You are free to advance any "theory" you want, but as for me - I'm not part of the conspiracy you suggest, nor am I Fred Hammon (check my profile)!
I can't account for nor do I defend what you say has been Fred's behavior nor am I pleased to hear what you said about your experience (I need another pair of DS's and hoped Fred would reopen his doors and get square with all). I certainly support you reporting on your experience and believe everyone should exercise more than adequate care in their dealings. However, that said, I have been involved with many discussions with many very real, very satisfied users of Dark Stars. Frankly, even recently on TB, the satisfied users outnumber those reporting bad experiences. In light of this, had the evidence of the Dark Star website's apparent dissapearance not shown up, would I have been justified in "theorizing" that you were the one spreading negative rumors? I don't think so, and I hope I wouldn't have done so.
