Can anyone please tell me about the short run of black Stingrays EBMM crafted in the late 80s/early 90s? Everything was black on these... headstock, back of the neck, pickguard, pickup and maybe the hardware? I seem to remember hearing that this particular run was limited to 100 and they sold for the same price as the regular Stingrays. At the time of their release, EBMM wasn't doing many (if any) special runs.
A little story about the only one of these I know about... a store in my hometown received one from EBMM back in the day and put it out on the floor with their other Stingrays. A local gospel player soon bought it and took it home. A few days after the sale, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were performing in town and Flea (who was playing black Stingrays at the time) had received word from San Luis Obispo that this particular store had one of the Darth Vaders in stock. So in comes Flea, ready to take home the Sith Lord, but was soon crushed when he learned that it was gone. The guy who ran the bass department told me later the gospel player that landed it merely wanted a black Stingray to play at his church... and couldn't care less that it was a limited edition, special run... or that it was called the Darth Vader
