David J (Bahuaus) Style flats?

I'm getting a Squier P-bass Special (since its a black body and pickguard) and deciding to put a fretless neck on it that I'm ordering. Now I know that David J Haskins of Bahaus used a fretless p-bass and flatwounds but he had some pretty growly tone (partly due to picking, i know) but I'm wonder what kind of flats could give me that sort of tone?

I suppose I could describe what im looking for as growly and not too bright and whiny. Something like this:




Any info or advice is GREATLY appreciated! Any by the way, I have a traynor all-tube amp so i got the ampeg-ish tone covered which is what he uses.

I'm thinking of using my guitarist's holy stain since it has fuzz and reverb on it in one pedal. Hopefully I can get a sound similar to his (i also own a DS-1 which is says he uses there). Thank you again for the info!

Sorry to resurrect a very old thread, but I've been getting into David J's playing recently and came across this. I played fretless years ago and always loved his Love And Rockets bass work. I've been getting back into fretless and rediscovering his work. I just listened to the Go Away White, and such good bass playing. Thanks for the recommendation.

Resurrection of a resurrection! David J's playing and tone are quite inspiring indeed. As of what strings he used/uses, there's an old D'Addario video where he states that he's been using Chromes since 1997 (if one does the math). In older Bauhaus videos however one can clearly see the red silks of what I take to be Rotosound flats.
