Double Bass DB bicycle thread

It’s about pressure on the nerves in that area that make the difference. Adding the padded shorts (I’m a bib guy) adds another layer of cush for the nerves to breathe thru. Glad your finding what works. So many similarities to DB!

Totally agree. Without getting too graphic, there has no impediment to "flow" with this saddle after the rides where I consume two 28 oz. bottles of water en route. This was not always the case with the previous saddle. Probably I was sitting on it incorrectly, but the new one smashes nothing because there's nothing there to smash sensitive areas with. Makes sense to me!

Edit: What does "I'm a bib guy" mean?

One thing that the braintrust here was definitely right about is about the usefulness of the padded bike shorts. I don't use mine as outerwear, but they make a big difference. Live and learn![/QUOTE]

Facts. I never throw a leg over the bike without at least $100 of chamois tech between my butt and the seat.

Check out mountain bike shorts for baggy shorts with integrated chamois inside.

Once you go bibs you never go back.

Just what I needed a Talkbass Bike thread.

Hey TBers, which bike should I buy??

I have quickly fallen in love with this new hobby and I want to upgrade from my Bike Shaped object.

I’m not looking to be the fastest, or compete, or spend thousands of dollars on a bike and ride it at 10mph. I’m mostly riding for fitness, commuting, and honestly just to see how far I can go.

I’ve found 2 bikes both in the $200 range,

First is a Specialized SIRRUS. Owner says it’s from 2016 but I think it might be a bit older, they’re asking $260 ( I’m going to try and talk them down a bit)

Next, is a giant escape 3. Not sure what year. Owner is asking $200

It's very common to mod a bike. A seat, a longer stem, a lighter seatpost, etc..

But when you sell it, you have two options. Either put the stock parts again, or disclose the parts that were changed. Usually they are upgrades, so even better. That doesn't seem to be the case though. They look like downgrades. But you have to disclose that in the add.

I could be wrong, of course. I'm curious to see more opinions.

If I may, I'd really encourage you to look for a $700-800 bike on sale down in the $500-600 range. You may find one on sale for less than that.

Stepping just a tier up from those bikes you're looking at will make the entire riding experience much more pleasant. Everything is better, which makes everything but the effort of pedaling itself much easier, which I bet translates into you loving your new hobby that much more.

Anyways!
In any case, ride what you dig.

Thanks for the advice!

What would you recommend in the $500-600 range? I really want something that has flat bars, a small frame (I’m 5’3”) and that is good for commuting. I’m a real newbie who’s not to sure what to look for to be honest. I’ve only been at this for around 3 months.

I'm partial to Specialized and those Cirrus models look like solid bikes that could do anything from tooling around town to commuting to bike path to easy trails. The 1.0 looks like a fine bike. I think the 2.0 and 3.0 just have some component upgrades.

You could also look thru Craigslist. Here’s a nice mountain bike that would make great commuter. Nice components and built to last a lifetime. And the Volvo edition! (A Volvo guy here

Nice bike! But that’s a large frame and the person looking is 5’3”. I had a Cannondale back in the day. Great bike.

Anyone else wear a brim/visor on your helmet? I just bought a Da Brim, after seeing a few of them on the trails - and yet another visit to the dermatologist during which she froze more various barnacles off my face and back.

Wore it today for the first time, and it seems to do a pretty good job at what I expected it to do - keep the sun off my face/ears/neck/shoulders. Also reduces eyestrain in the bright sun - even w/ sunglasses - as any hat with a brim does.

There is a MINOR occasional "sail" sensation when it catches a breeze or something, where you'll feel your helmet strap tighten. But I'm sure I could adjust my strap - or just learn to ignore it. But for the most part you don't even realize you have it on.

Just wanted to spread the word, in case you are ever biking in conditions where such a thing might be of use. I slather on the lotion - but could do it even more. This seems to me like a 1 time expenditure that could hopefully reduce one longterm health risk factor.

Those are very big in the recumbent community or bent riders as we like to call ourselves. When you’re sitting on a seat sitting up, it’s nice to be able to block the sun from your eyes and head. A lot of the recumbent shops sell them

Da Brim - link in my previous thread. My sister rides behind me and said it did a really good job of shading a good portion of my shoulders and upper back. You can adjust the brim somewhat. As it came, the front was a tad low, causing me to need to bend my head back. But a tug on a velcro strap was all it took.

Plus, you can get it in Day-Glo to increase visibility - always a good thing.

If anyone else gets one, I nominate it for the most unnecessarily confusing instructions. Basically all you do is jam it over your helmet and pull a strap to tighten it. Which is what you would do if you just got it with no instructions. But trying to follow the instructions for once in my life, I found myself wondering, "Wait, which hand do I use to hold it exactly where? Then I flip it over?..."
