Dbx 1066 pumping

i have this compresor set in front of my pre amp, my threshold is about a tick or two below 0 and the ratio is at 4:1. Medium attack quick release.

I seem to be having a hard time with the signal pumping. What causes this?

I'm getting around 6-8db reduction

I would first work on getting the comp set up with the gate and the limiter off.
Try over easy on, because that applies a soft knee so the transition into compression is a bit smoother.
Keep the contour on, because that filters out extremely low energy from the detector circuit to lessen pumping.
Try the auto setting for the attack and release to see if the comp can apply times to prevent pumping.

Pumping is usually caused by heavy compression and attack/release timing issues from very low bass energy. You should be able to find attack and release times that work with your 6dB reduction without pumping.
