Dead Notes/Spots?

On my Standard Jazz I have a bunch of "Dead Spots". I know it is common on the G string but i have them on my E string. Its more of a "dead area" because from my 11th fret down to my 17th fret there is no sustain whats so ever. Can somebody help me out? please? It is a practically bass. I need the notes.

Two things to try: first, lower your neck pickup slightly on the E string side. You may be have a problem with the pickup magnets being too close to the E string (called string pull). Second, try new strings. A bad string can cause all sorts of odd problems.

A bad string may be the cause. Also a twisted string causes a lot of trouble. If you release the string just enough to enable the ball end to rotate, you may untwist a twisted string, if the twist hasn't settled already.
Let's hope the string is somehow the cause.

yeah i fixed it, i raised the action and it helped and only had the dead spot on 17, then changed to new strings and it is gone now, thanks guys

Most of my basses over the years have had that dead spot on the G string (usually either the C, C#, or most often the D), and I've found that that particular spot can be helped, if not solved, by making sure the action is as low as usable --->this means adjusting the truss rod for minimal relief that still allows string vibration. Makes a world of difference IME.

Yeah it was just a dead string, I bought the thing brand new. the action was offset so i straightened it out and it helped out sooooooooo much. And then the new string on it got rid of it completely. thank you guys for the help

I think you mean from 11th fret "UP" to the 17th fret. Your hand actually travels UP the neck and the pitch rises from 11th to 17th fret.. sorry it's just a pet peeve from too many years of teaching!! Up the the neck pitch rises, down the neck pitch gets lower.
