Dead Sounds on E and A

I have a mid 60's Teisco Del Ray bass. THe E and A strings have a dead thud sound while thhe D and G resonate and sound nice. I can't see anything physically different. Any ideas? Its the blue one in the pic.

Might sound obvious but what strings are you using?

They guy I bought it from threw in a new set of strings he had (who knows how old they were). Maybe DRs I can't remember. I got home and took the old strings off, cleaned up the guitar and put the new ones on but maybe I should restring it again.

I'd try restringing it with strings on another bass that you know aren't dead. Scale length could be a problem though. :/

looks short-scale, so you might need thicker guages on the E and A. However, my first guess is bad strings - even if they are brand new.

From a look at the headstock, it seems that those two strings would line up straighter if they were wound on the outsides of the pegs. Don't know if that would make any difference, though...

Yea I'm definately gonna try new strings. Those are longscale strings that I put on that short scale bass....
