Put a piece of foam under just the G string. Like many bassists do under all the strings, but cut a smaller piece to fit under just the G.

Agreed. Probably the easiest remedy until (if) the string mellows out.

Try Eucarin again, the right Eucarin. I found it can really kill strings. Between "new" and "dead" the difference is not subtle at all but extreme. So you might not have applied "enough" to your live string. Fortunately if you use too much over multiple applications you can resuscitate the strings by cleaning them off with IPA

My plan is just to play the snot out of them and hope they even out, because I really like the feel.

Update: This plan is *not* working - 5 weeks in, my G still sounds like a completely different animal. It’s got a bright metallic overtone that almost makes notes sound sharp.

Decided to email LaBella before I start slapping on the hand cream and onion ring grease. I’ll report back if/when I hear anything. Really hoping I just got a bad G, because the tone and feel of the E-A-D is *so* good…

Reporting back as promised… LaBella got back to me right away and sent me a new G. Put it on yesterday and I can already hear the difference - it’s obviously “fresher” than the E-A-D right now, but it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb like the last one did. I’m a happy camper!

When I wear it out, I’ll cut them both open and see if there’s a difference in construction or if the previous one was just a dud. Of course, given my track record with replacing flats, that might not be until 2046…
