Deadest sounding rounds

Any tips on which rounds, out of the box, sound like dead old rounds? kinda a funny request, but thats what I like on this one P bass, and dont want to spend the months/years getting bright rounds to mellow that much. thanks..

I wouldn't use the word "dead", but GHS Balanced Nickels (pure nickel on a round core) come out of the package sounding nicely mellowed already. They sounded great on my P bass when I tried them, not to mention their broken-in tone seemed to last forever.

After several years of constant experimenting, I've finally decided my P bass needs a set of well-broken-in (but not dead) NPS rounds, NOT flats. So, I plan on putting GHS Boomers on it when it's time for a change and leave them on till they are worn out to the point of losing their useful tone to see how long that would take.

By the way, for non-zingy rounds, you might also like the Round Core Boomers, which are even mellower than the regular Boomers.

IMO, pure nickel rounds have the least "zing" when new. Fender, GHS, Pyramid, TI, and Gabriel Tenorio are all good places to look for pure nickel rounds.

DR Nickel Low Riders (which are NPS, not pure nickel) are also pretty subdued in the highs, especially after a week or two.

One "dead round" your should try is GHS Pressurewounds - rounds without the zing is how I'd describe them.

Never found any. That's why I use Eucerin cream on them.

Wipe new rounds with butter and they will sound dead.

Black Beauties are rather zingy. It's one of the things I like about them.

Whether we are talking about rounds or flats I never understand how some people on TB act as though it takes months to wear in a new set of strings. I am not a particularly sweaty oily guy, but when I used GHS Boomers I loved them out of the pack but felt like they lost it after just one gig. One of the reasons I switched to flats. I can't see why anyone would want dead rounds instead of flats but if that is what you want just grab any pack and start playing. I liked GHS so I would go with those for what you are requesting, plus as I said I never found them particularly long lasting or zingy.

I like zingy strings. I tried some Ernie Ball Cobalts one time, and was very disappointed in how lifeless the sounded. You might try a set of those.
