So... thinking out loud here, but I may have come up with a workable design for a removable strap-peg extension using the Dunlop Strap-Lok system. I need to fab a working model to make sure it will work, but essentially it would be made from thin aluminum (as on the Deadlybird IV) with 2 Dunlop Strap-Lok units attached to it. Two inset female-units would be installed at the neck-plate area on the bass. (I drew 4 but I think 2 will be sufficient) The locking pole/stem on the male unit is 1/4" so I'd need to apply a rectangle of plastic to the back of the extension. (1/16" aluminum extension + 3/16" plastic rectangle + 2 male Strap-Loks) It may be a little tricky pushing two of the spring-loaded buttons at the same time while lifting off the extension, but that will come to light once I mock it up. To refresh - the reason I want to make this extension removable is so the bass will fit in a hard-shell case. Wanted it to be easy on, easy off, secure and self contained. (only the unit) If it works it will go on the new bird and the IV will get an upgrade.

Johnny is blocking the view of his 4x12 Marshall (guitar) amp and the Peavey bass-head/homemade 1x15 cab rig is for his Moog Taurus pedalboard. He uses it strategically and sparingly to fatten-up some of our songs. (original material by Johnny) In this trio I use my SWR 400S and 4x10 Goliath that I bought new in '96 (pre Fender SWR) and rarely have it above 10:00. (clock-face reference - as in, never even at 1/2 volume) Once I used this rig coupled with a Carvin 1x18 - talk about big bottom! I'm working on him to downsize his guitar amp because it's big, heavy and too loud. We let go a lead guitarist in Bond Girl for the same reason. (well, along with other reasons...) When I tell a guitarist their amp is too loud and hear them reply; "I have the amp volume barely at 1! - it's too loud an amp. Especially in todays market where small, efficient, 'loud enough' guitar amps are out there.

Yeah, I don't want to stand on a stage, especially a small one, with a 4×12 half stack. I play guitar too and I've been gigging with a blues Jr for almost 20 years. I've played large stages, with no mic on the amp, and it always performed great. Aside from the fact you need a pedal for true, over-the-top distortion it is an awesome working-man's-amp.

I down-sized my bass rig too. I used to run a 4x10 cab I wired myself with the marshal speakers that Trace used and either a GK 700RB or a Hartke HA5500. Ever since I got the Markbass 1x12 combo the bigger gear sits. One band I work with regularly does mostly small gigs where the combo hangs with the volume just fine (guitarist's play blues jrs). The other band runs everything FOH so the combo is the bass stage monitor.

We are on the same page Reed - with TSC's, I use an Eden 2x10 with a Mesa M-2000 650w head or my '76 Ampeg B-15N. I really don't 'need' a 4x10 cab, but I use it with SMF because it lives at our rehearsal space. I even tried to sell it at one point but no-one wants them anymore. It sounds great - but it is a big, awkward, heavy clump of a cab. We use a TC Electronics BG250 1x12" combo amp for keys in TSC's and it is a joy to cart being smallish and light. (also sounds really good for bass and is plenty loud)

I'm the volume-nazi in the bands I play with because 'too-loud' is stupid unless your Mono or Mugwai. Guitarists are usually the ones in a band (other than drummers) who get touchy about their volume. I never buy the argument as I've heard plenty of live music that was 'heavy' and dynamic but not 'too-loud'.

The removable extension looks good so far - as is the case when used with a strap, there's a bit of play once in the locked state. So there needs to be a thin flexible layer to act as a washer so the connection is firm with no play. I had some 1/16" thin cork which works, but I need a substance/material that won't crumble apart like the cork would in use. Something like leather could work, or a padding material of the right thickness and density. Leather sounds like the best idea as a synthetic material may create issues with the body finish.

Shielded the cavities, wired it up, installed the LED unit but need to cut a trans-white plastic lens to back the cut-out as I did on the other one. Strung up old strings to start the set-up adjustments (D wasn't holding) Weighs 8lbs flat. Enough for today. Will get the bridge set up and work on installing the removable strap extension. Pretty hot this bird.

:) Thanks! I got a second wind before calling it a day last night and installed new strings (D'Addario EXL160BT 50-120 nickel wound medium gauge) and intoned the bridge. Sounds good quiet! Will take more pics later - the Sonic Red is very red, a few steps away from being day-go! Looks good in satin. Should look awesome under stage lighting. FTR, this one like my Teiscobird #2 (red one) were both built to sell. The TB#2 is already on Reverb. Once I finish up this one it will joint there. The thing about both is I can make more to order, in any color/finish - I have it down and they rock.
