Dealing With A Listless mood

You know sometimes when you know you should do something, such as practice, but you just don't feel like doing it? In fact, you don't feel like doing anything at all? I enjoy practicing and other things most of the time but when this mood hits I have no desire to do anything, and if I do do something I gain nothing from it, cause I half ass it hard and don't pay attention. What do you folks do when this mood hits?

This was a major symptom for me when I had depression. I'd sit in front of my computer, not doing anything, decide that I really should play bass, pick it up, sit there for 10 minutes staring at it, then put it back. It was horrible.

Tell me, how often does this happen, how long does it last? When did you first notice it happening?

Sometimes this would last a day or more for me. Now I'm a lot better, and if it does happen, it doesn't last nearly as long.

from time to time i have that feeling, and i've also had that feeling for the past 2 weeks or so. so far, i haven't found anything that helps other than waiting it out. just continue doing things in reflection to how you feel- you'll either realize that you can't just keep doing things half-a$$ed and eventually be done with it, or realize that the mood itself is pointless and be done with it. also, being under pressure to do something always helps.

i also find bottling up all my feelings and never letting them out helps with anything.

Go with it and don't stress, we all need our peaks and troughs, although if you feel it is really interfering with your life, see a counsellor or a doctor.
If you can't find anything to inspire you just have some fun for a while, sometimes your brain needs to just shut off. I love mindless entertainment, and am a total night owl so am very glad we have [adult swim] on tv here in the early hours of the morning. I play console games too, and almost always have music on if the tv is shite (i.e most of the time), and love a great film or book.
Sometimes I sketch and used to write a lot of poetry although don't feel the need to write at the moment, and always find meditating is good. Sometimes it's just relaxing, but other times it can be very refreshing and focusing and helps me to tap into my creativity, even if I was feeling lack-lustre beforehand.

I've never really paid attention to how often it happens or how long it lasts, as I usually attribute it to just a trough in my mood, although looking back it seems to happen fairly often.

I like the idea of meditating, I plan on going out and picking up some insence today and being ready for the next time I feel like this. Yesterday I went for a walk and when I got back I had slightly more motivation, enough that I could struggle through learning a song that I had to learn, but my attention span was just about .01 seconds which is really annoying.

If meditation and mindless entertainment don't work I think I'll buy a bunch of black clothes and some eyeliner and see how that treats me.

Could be your diet...too much refined sugar causes drastic spikes in mood. A lot of people are consuming tons of refined sugar in foods and they don't even know it. Green tea...great stuff. One of the most "reflective" drinks on earth...always picks me up.

Exercising always helps and might be all you need. If this problem perisists, though, and it interferes with your life, you should go see a doc. Do you really want to spend most of your life wanting to do something, but not doing it anyway?

That's all good stuff you're doing there :)
The eyeliner is a white elephant though! ;)

If you like the idea of incense, why not try aromatherapy oils? If you don't have a burner, you can always get an oil and pop a few drops on a tissue and let the aroma seep into the air of the room you're in (or place on top of a heater). Or there are ceramic rings with a groove in them to place the oil in and pop on top of a light bulb.

Basil is great for focusing the mind, as are the citrus-based oils, but remember to check the contra-indications for any oil you choose as some can be harmful for particular conditions. For instance, some can cause miscarriage (if there is a pregnant woman around!).

I prefer oils as I find the incense can be a bit 'choky' on the throat.

Have you meditated before?

I would bet my diet has something to do with it. Being broke I haven't eaten much besides pasta and chicken, pizza, and pop-tarts or oatmeal, along with some brews.

I like those oils, I feel the same way about 'choky' incense, but sometimes i like the smoky air as well.

i have meditated before, I don't recall what style of meditation it was though. it was 'clear your mind of everything and focus on nothing' meditation though. Have you any recommendations?

Sounds like you need some friut and veg :)

I guess any kind would be beneficial but I like creative visualisation after I have done my breathing and relaxed all my muscles.

It's not something I have a link to on the net I'm afraid.

I normally talk someone through a meditation if they want to learn new things, so to do a proper run-through on here would take up a ridiculously large amount of space, and may not be to other TBers liking. The only thing I can suggest is by phone, and that could cost you quite a bit, unless you can find something about it on the net (I have never looked tbh!).
