Dean Edge Q5 as first bass

I recently picked up a Dean Edge Q5 as my first bass to learn on, as I didn't really know anything about basses and it looked really nice, but when I talked to my Dad about it he seemed apprehensive about it being a Dean, and about it being 5 strings. I personally think it looks nice, and I don't really mind learning on a 5 string, but I'm not sure about the quality or tone of the instrument since I have no experience whatsoever, and I don't know anybody nearby who plays bass. I paid around $559 for it new, and I still have time to take it back if that's the best choice. What do you guys think? I still have no idea what kind of music I will end up wanting to play or what kind of tone I will want.

Here's a picture of it that I took:

Thanks for the help!

In my personal opinion there's nothing wrong with learning on a 5 string, as long as you focus on playing with proper technique. Is your father a guitarist by chance? My personal experience with their guitars has been less than positive, their QC department has some room for improvement.
If I were in your position I would look elsewhere for a beginning bass around $500 but that is just my personal preference. If everything seems in order (no sharp or low frets, excessive buzzing etc.) and you like how it sounds and plays by all means keep it.

yep, you hit the nail on the head, my dad is indeed a guitarist.
In my noob opinion the bass looks and feels nice with no obvious flaws.
Was $559 a good price to pay for this bass, or was it maybe a little expensive?
What are some good 4-strings you'd suggest in that price range? I don't mind paying a little more for a quality instrument that will last me awhile.

Thanks for your help!

I have been happy with my Dean Edge 5, it's a high-quality problem free bass. Having said that, I probably would have recommended something like a Squier P Bass, you could get one of their nicer models for far less than you paid for the Dean. Check CraigsList for used Fenders, etc. Good Luck!

I've noticed that the strings buzz against the frets right as I am letting go of a note almost every single time. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've tried a few other basses out in the store and none of them seem to have a problem like this. Is there some adjustment I could do to fix it?
