This may sound stupid, but I understand that if you engage the tuner switch, it mutes the signal for silent tuning. After all these technical suggestions, and as good a logic as they have, it might just be that the tuner switch is engaged. Just a thought...

Yes, check this out while you are at it. I bought a used Ampeg SVT-III that did the same thing. I plugged something into the effects return one day and then it started giving me problems. Turns out it was the jack not "closing" (Im no technical expert, so this might be a bad analogy) so it cut off the sound.

It sounds like the power tubes. Sometimes they make those sounds while they slowly reach full operating temperature. Try letting the tubes warm up longer before you start playing.

Thanks for the reply! I usually give it at least a 5 minute warm up period before I flip the standby switch but i willy try 10 minutes the next few times and see what happens.

This has kind of been a problem with the JJ power tubes. From what I've seen, they are pretty good other than that. It's not harmful, just annoying.

Maybe these have a current limiting diode that is sensing an open in the output. Could be something as dumb as a bad or intermittently open speaker cable or cold soldered/high resistance jack wire inside cabinet. Tube amps are usually pretty temperamental when it come to output load.
