Deathmetal question

OK So i Don't know much about death metal, but I found a post by a fellow member who I will leave unnamed, but I followed his myspace link to check out a song and a few things hit me.

#1. It's creepy as all CRAP!!!! To the point where I dind't feel comfortable.

#2. Very hard to understand with that growling and pig whailing going on.

#3. Is this satanic praise and worship music???

So of course #1 and #2 are my own opinion, but I'd like someone to answer #3 for me. Is Black Metal really Satanistic Praise and Worship music? It seems like the whole culture really stems off of "Satan". Or are there some groups that aren't into that side of it, or in order to be black/death metal you have to be into Satanism?

Thanks to anyone that can help enlighten me.

Satanism in it's true form, is not about worshiping a demon with a pitchfork and a squiggly tail. Satanism is worship fo self and indulgence of all humanly desires. The Satan worship you're talking about is nothing more than theatrics. Black metal is not about worshiping a demon no more than boy band music is about worshiping puppies and stickers and bubble gum (or whatever the hell they sing about). Black metal, like every other style of music is a product that is marketed in a particular way. It is meant to seem "satanic" because that turns rebels and teenagers on and it makes them spend that hard earned $$$.

Is there a "message" in any lyric? Only if the listener puts it there. What means one thing to you might mean something totally different to me. And we can debate until the end of time about what the artist's intent was when writing the lyric.

"Death" metal nowadays is mainly show, with an emphasis on brutality. "Black" metal is a genre for people who genuinely think they want to overthrow Christian morals, and is therefore often bound up with befuddled sympathies for Nazism, racism, and such stuff. There is a strong nostalgia for quasi-heathen ideas - compassion seen as weakness, etc.

As you've noticed, the lyrics can be unintelligible due to singers trying to emulate infernal, demonic voices, sometimes with a pitch shifting device. From what I've read on various band sites, it may be better that way. The well-turned lyric has no place in these styles.

There seems to be a strong "deathwish" strain in Western popular culture lately. You see skull motifs even on infants' clothes. That's "cool".

I would be tempting to say that the prevalence of satanic or demonic content to certain styles of heavy metal started with the very first Black Sabbath album with songs such as NIB and Black Sabbath but actually such subject matter goes way back into classical music of all kinds and is probably almost as old as music itself.

A Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky is one example of many and the demonic content was illustrated in the film Fantasia:

Now black metal and death metal are actually different sub-genres of metal music so they are not the same. Some black and death metal bands are satanic but far from all. Satanism (serious, as a gimmick or just "satanic themes") are more common in black metal.

Some people argue that one must be satanic to play black metal but most dont. There are christian death and black metal bands but they are rare and doesnt have the same big following as other bands might have. Since metal is often rooted in rebellion the imagera of Satan (the opposer) often connects with bands and fans even if they arent satanists per se.

I was in a death metal back in 1993 for about two months (back then, they called it Death Metal). I joined to play one gig, and I was so thankful when it was over. I couldn't stand the way that stuff made me feel.

BTW, in regards to your question - while the music was definately about some weird stuff, it wasn't in anyway satanic. In fact, the other three guys in the band were catholic.

I can also agree that while i was listening to deathmetal it didn't make me feel to "right"...lol. I need my music to breathe. It was definately brutal, so I guess they accomplished that part.


With that being said which mod do I need to PM to have this thread moved?

Listened to a Christian Death metal band name Devil Wears Prada. (atleast the singer said "ready for some [pause] CHRISTIAN DEATH METAL!?" They were very bad and the keyboardist was playing one not (or it looked like he was, you couldn't hear it) and dancing around the singer.

They were a shame to all music, mainly because the singer stopped in the middle of a song to pray because he swore after the keyboardist bumped into him while he was try to head-bang.

They were the only band that begged for everyone to buy an album.

I was visiting with the band after the show and they were complete jerks. Maybe it was a bad show, but they seemed to show an aura of holier-than-thou attitude in this small town. They opened for Chimaira, Shadow's Fall and GWAR. (in that order)

personally i just think is sounds like crap.
I don't think religion plays anymore a part in it than teenage angst.
I'm sure there might be decent stuff out there, but i haven't heard it.

Might be better if the singers decided to learn how to enunciate.

uhh 3 is mostly a question of whether or not it's black metal.......which sucks. all of it. don't let anyone tell you different.
I think there are a lot of smart bands that choose to stay religiously clean (clean of religion, the aspect is absent in their message/music), a lot of the reason why we play death metal is just the striving for like a new "alpha" music.....like taking something so far to the extreme in technicality and agression that nothing can ever measure up. That's why I dig it.
