Deciding between 2 very different basses

I'm in a minor dilemma and could use some advice:
I am choosing between a Musicman Sterling and a good old precision bass.

I am not a very flashy player, I enjoy laying down a solid groove and staying there. I'm mostly associated with alternative, hip hop, and dub funk styles of music.

My favorite bass sounds on records are either musicman or precisions... I love them both.

If you to only have one of these basses, which would you go with and why? Which one do you think will work better in my case?

I was in the same boat as you. I was staring at those two for a month or so when a great deal on one of them came up and I bought it. And I never looked back since. I'm not going to tell you which one though, because I don't think that would help much.

I think you should go into a store, and try them both out. They are different basses, with different feels and different tones. I'm certain one of them will be a better fit for you and you'll know it almost instantly. If not, sleep on it and come back the next day.

I've played both extensively.

I do like the look and feel of a precision bass, and of course I like the sound. I'd likely end up exchanging the neck for a jazz width one.

The actual Sterling I would buy is one that I used to own... I think it has a kind of an ex-girlfriend lure on me. Very up front and in your face sound that I would want to be able to tame, but not sure that I can.

I'll be playing with both models today, hopefully I can make a decision! In an ideal world... I'd own both..
