Decked out Squier?

I think it's a great idea. I'm modding an SX p bass with a DP127 split p pickup and a lefty (older headstock shape jazz neck with blocks) SX neck. I think upgrading a cheap bass can be just as rewarding as purchasing a much more expensive bass (as long as the instrument has a professional setup).

To answer a couple of your questions ... Squier made what they call a Precision Special, it is a P bass body, with a P pup in the neck position and a Jazz pup in the bridge position ... neck is the same neck used on the Jazz Standard series, 1.5" at the nut ... perhaps my favorite profile of any neck, at any price ... they havent made these for a couple years, but they are still out there new old stock, and used all over the place for under $200 .. my personal opinion is that I prefer either a P or a J over a PJ, but some on here would consider it the best of both worlds ...

... as far as amps, decent on the cheap .. since you like Hartke and GK, there are decent (older used) heads quite inexpensively in both, look for the older Mosfet type 2000/3500's in Hartke, and the BL 600 or 400RB (preferred) in GK most of these are avail for $200 range or less (2000's and BL600's probably $125+range) and then add your $150-200 cab of choice ... Hartke cabs used are quite inexpensive ... just a few thougts that would have you spending less than your original post and with a lot better gear and resale at or near what you have into it ... JMHO

Edit to add: your very first comments were speaking of a MIM Standard P bass .. dont rule them out either, I am seeing some sell VERY inexpensively these days, and if you can pick up one of these for around $200-250, its tough to go wrong ...some on here will tell you that a Squier CV or VM will be better, I will say that the Squiers do seem to be more consistent, but a $200 MIM Standard P with a working truss rod is better than money in the bank ... again JMHO

Good advice, I really would have to dig deep to find a used MIM Standard P and a used stack for under $800 or $900, i think i could though.

Heres a rig im checking out. Gonna keep trying to find used and lower prices...but

Hartke 410XL $349.94

Gallien-Krueger MB200 $249

Squier VM P Bass $279.99

Total: $878.93

The two would work right? Head is 200 watts at 4 ohms, cab is 400 watts at 8 ohms

Don't bother with the Badass II, it isn't worth it; listen to it before upgrading pups, the sound isn't for everyone; forget the pickguard, it won't fit on a Squier. You'd be better to put the money into a CV Squier - they're a ton better than the VM series, and great, classic sound. YMMV, FWIW, IMO, IME, etc.

I know that this is subjective,,but I sold my C.V. because I did not like the thick orange finish on the neck. I found it a bit stickey when my hands would perspire. My V.M. Jazz has a satin finish which I find feels great and is better looking IMHO.

So P-rules you certainly have lots of options. Your amp rig as you have it planned is fine. You could do darn near any gig with that.

As for your P-bass you should consider this one. The MIK Squier's are solid and a great value. The one here would make a terrific bass for you. I play a MIK Squier Jazz that I have modded but I played it stock for well over a year before I did so.

I don't like the thick finish, either. So, I take 400 grit sandpaper to it to cut into the finish, then follow that with 1,000 grit, then polish with #0000 steel wool. This leaves the finest finish ever, even nicer than a thin nitro finish!

Anyone ever played an Indiana bass? Just remembered my local music store sells them very cheap and thats what my bassist in my old band used. It sounde pretty well, wanna know if its built well, or atleast similar to a squier. Its a p

Well, I'll just echo what some others have said. I'd say if you like it, then take it home and play it for awhile...you may like the sound as it is.

But for about the same price that you've listed, once in awhile you can score a nice used bass on CL without having to do all of the work to it.

/cheers
