Defending against multi-string prejudice and, "That's a guitar!"

There are kids dying in Darfur, Pakistan is still devistated from the floods last summer, Japan is still cleaning up its rubble, and it looks like parts of the midwest and south are currently under water from the storms.

If you're upset over people calling your "6-string bass guitar" a "guitar," then life has gotta be pretty darn easy for you. Just smile, nod, and say "Yup, you're right. Say, baby, what's your phone number?"

"While my [bass] guitar gently weeps."

Is this posted in, "Emergency! Someone said I don't really play bass!"? No, it's under humor, it's meant to be a mildly humorous, mildly informative mind relaxant. Nobody's really bent out of shape... 'cept you. Sorry man, you should come to Cali and get all 215.

You forgot to mention that "Rolling Stone Magazine" did an exposé on the bank bailout [http://www.rollingstone.com/politic...look-whos-cashing-in-on-the-bailout-20110411], citing that it was not a mere $700 billion, but in fact $6 trillion, with a "t" was given out, some of it just handed to bored housewives at $200 million a pop. While people are starving as you say, the wealthy handed themselves $6t of US taxpayer money, no strings attatched, add to that the debt of illegal wars paid to the same billionaires, and that billionaires have paid zero taxes for ten years, and yeah, that's the entire US debt accounted for. The rich have pulled off the biggest theft in human history to get richer, while others starve, and citizens go homeless. It sucks.

NortyFiner understood, I reached someone.

That's right! The viola da gamba of yore was a fretted, 6, 7, or even 8 (or however you wanted it) stringed instrument, sometimes played horizontally. It's tuned in 4ths, like our dear bass guitars, not in 5ths like evil violins.

People don't know this? I can see not getting the connection with the electric bass, but this rules-about-how-to-build-an-instrument thing is new. I learned in school that an orchestra was originally just a bunch of musicians playing together with someone keeping them in time, and that if you had an instrument, it was yours and most likely designed to your specs.

I think it's official!
This one wins my "Most Boring Thread of the Week" award.

I even came back on different days to read it to see if any of it sounded remotely interesteing...uh...NOPE!

Carry on.

Tragedies happen every day. You seem to imply that none of these conversations ever hold weight because of the misfortunes of people we have never met. Guess what? Children are still starving, women are being oppressed, crazy people have weapons, and free-form jazz improv still lives. Deal with it, say a prayer if it suits you, and leave the snooty lectures out of the humor forum.

Huh? What's 215? Like Pennsylvania?

On second, more careful read of this thread, I gotta say I misread things. I thought it was one of those 'why can't the public get the difference between a bass guitar and a ____" threads. My point was supposed to be that my reaction was "Oh boy... here we go again on one of those 'who the #$*@ cares' threads again."

You seem to imply that none of these conversations ever hold weight because of the misfortunes of people we have never met.

See above. Oh well...

It's really strange how many people have their teeth, and other parts, clenched about stuff. They go to the "relax forum" listings, and get all cranky and bent out of shape. In the words of the prophet Ali G., "Check yourself before you wreck yourself."
