defretting without lines?

i bought a squire affinity p bass for a mod project, im wanting to defret but everything ive read on here that being used to fill the fret slots (putty, veneer) leaves the fret marker lines. i want no lines and get rid of my dots too. visible at close inspection is ok, i plan on staining the fingerboard black and epoxying it still havent decided yet on rounds or flats. has anyone successfully removed almost all traces of having had frets. also what kind of stain should i use one the finger board? preferably something that i could get at lowes or wal mart.

Using rosewood stripes instead of another wood ?

Sand the fretboard, let the dust fill in the slots and apply CA adhesive. You will have to do this several times to get the slots filled and level.

What I did was this: remove the frets and dots, then filled them with ebony veneer and plugs, respectively. On the dots, make sure the grain is facing the same way as the board, or else you'll see them. I secured them with thin super glue, then sanded them down to the level of the board. You have to look REALLY close to see them.
