The more basses, the more work to keep them properly set up, at least in my climate. There's some real diminishing returns. I currently have three, and even that feels like too much.

Exactly. There's a lot of wisdom in that post. Watching my sister's lifetime of stuff reduced to landfill sickened me. Knowing how charitable she was, she'd have had a fit seeing her household belongings fill a dumpster, but that's what her son did. Makes you rethink "collecting" stuff, especially when you're entering your back nine.Try clearing out a home that a relative has lived in for a few decades.
That'll dissuade you from buying more stuff.

My guitarist and I were talking about this a couple of weeks ago. Mostly about the burden on the ones left behind of "disposing of" our gear.I'm actually considering getting rid of three basses and getting one slightly nicer bass for basically the sale value of the others. Helps with storage space too....
I must be getting old.
Well, I am thinking of going from 10 to 7. One is a shared practice space/jam bass. So not exactly one bass to rule them all...I did this in 2016/27. One bass to rule them all, main amp and mini-back up. This was after living in a 50sqft apartment for 6 months abroad. Helped greatly with the perspective of needs vs wants vs nice to haves.
I'll be hanging on to 8 (I can't count). I'm goodI strongly recommend hanging on to two basses -- the second as emergency backup. If you're not gigging this is less important, but even so, I'd prefer to have a second as insurance in case the first needs to spend time with a tech for whatever reason.
But you do you! Best of luck.
I have two Tokai JBs. Maybe I don't need an active Fender but instead another Tokai JB?I scale down and something just happens , again and again. I got down to a Sadowsky as my one bass and I ended up trading some stuff for a Tokai JB and for some silly reason bought a Mustang bass and while on my way walking out of a shop last week , I see this bass in the junk rack that I buy for $50.00 and a week later turned it into a pretty hot fretless .
Did something like this recently - sold all of myI strongly recommend hanging on to two basses -- the second as emergency backup.
