they've been installed for a while now, and I promised clips, but I had some things come up. now its time to get the ball rolling.
the hybrid system is supposed to be a combination of a passive jazz bass and a musicman. they've been installed in a lakland 55-94, which is strung with ernie ball slinkys, strung through the bridge.
I recorded a simple B minor scale at about a tempo of 128 bpm, direct to a hard disk recorder, then normalized each clip.
first up - bridge pickup in musicman mode, soloed -
Delano Hybrid MM
Next - Bridge pickup in jazz mode, soloed-
Delano Hybrid J - Bridge
both jazz pickups on full -
Delano J - Both
Neck jazz pu soloed -
Delano J - Neck
Conclusions: to me, the jazz pickups nail the jazz tone. They're true old school single coils, so there is hum when they are soloed, but this has never bothered me. To me, the musicman pickup does ok, but doenst have that certain musicman 'something'. I guess this can be said about a lot of the other aftermarket ones as well. eq does help the musicman pickup get closer, however. I have the delano eq installed, which did take a while to grow on me, but now I like it. it's mid frequency seems to be right where a music man pickups mid tones lie, so you can get even closer with eq.
all in all, I was looking for a jazz tone, with the option to go back to the musicman sound if i needed to. I'm happy with them, and the eq grows on me more each day.
