Delay vs Tape Echo & Analog vs Digital simulation

The Strymon Volante is pretty amazing and does all kinds of fun stuff. If delay/echo effects are something that you use a lot, it may be worth the cost.

For bass, I don't use delay a lot. I used an old, Boss DM-2 for many years and I really liked it. A couple years ago, I got a Wampler Faux Tape Echo v2 and it was pretty apparent that it was much better suited to bass than the Boss. It handles hot signals much better with no clipping.

Lots of options these days though. Probably best to play with a few and see what you think.

Cool! It's funny how much you can get sucked into that thing. One of the guitar players I sit in with has one of those. When he first got it, it was next to impossible to get him to play the guitar instead of messing with the Volante.

I’ve never cared much about how precisely delays are at replicating the sounds of what they’re inspired by. If they sound good I like them.

That said, with guitar I’ve found I much prefer darker tape, and analog style delays, digital or otherwise. I prefer them for the exact reason mentioned, they add an ambiance while staying out of the way of whatever I’m playing.

With bass it’s just the opposite. I prefer more digital sounding delays that are brighter and more percussive. I want the top end of a dotted eighth to add texture, but don’t necessarily need the lows muddying up what I’m playing or the mix in general.

I’m not sure what deep diving on the Strymon is like but with the Boss DD500 you have access to a desktop editor and can tweak parameters endlessly and really get your tweak on - something I know you enjoy.

I really like the Analogue and Tape delays in the Source Audio Nemesis. It’s also got a pair of Binson Echorec models too. The Analogue Delay is just a perfect emulation of a dbucket brigade delay like a Moog. The Collider has the Analogue, tape and oil Drum delays too. It’s so good I would only flip this pedal is a Nemesis mk2 was released!

Received my Volante today & must say it is a glorious little box... magikal, lush, & full of surprises... i got lost in it for 2 hrs & feel like Ive barley scratched the surface

The Volante is a masterpiece of coding and knobing. The tactility is spot on and encourages you to play. I have moved on to a Quad Cortex now so the Volante us for sale, but I will miss its pine-lime presence on my board.
