Okay...I'm not sure I understand this. While this is a question about my basses, it's more to do with our sound guy's problems with my tone last weekend...To be honest, I don't know that much about live sound, but I'll do the best I can in describing our setup:
1. We're all DI, even the drums, which have mesh pads (though that's immaterial for this discussion).
2. 2 basses: US Spector NS-4 with 18-volt EMGs and Hazlab preamp, Jerzy Drozd Mastery VI with 9-volt Bart preamp and Bart pickups. My signal path was basses (one at a time) into my Avalon VT-737sp into the board; no effects or anything else in between.
In practice, this same setup the guitarist (acting sound guy in practice, as well) complains my Jerzy's output is too hot, but my Spector isn't...must be the internal preamp gain I've set on each. That's why this is so perplexing...
My Spector, which just a week earlier turned out crisp and clear and clean and hi-fi came out muddy and thuddy, while the Jerzy punched through like nobody's business.
I talked to the sound guy between each set. I let him have a field day with my Avalon, tool around with any other settings anywhere else in the signal chain he wanted, and he still couldn't find a sound for my Spector. In my ears (in-ear-monitors, btw), my Spector was all over the place...I could barely hear anything else, and it was distorted and muddy and all kinds of bad stuff!
So...if my Jerzy is hotter in practice, why is my Spector so muddy?
One more note: I'm positive it's not an issue with the batteries in the bass as they're new and I've since gotten good tone with the same batteries installed.
Any thoughts as to why the hotter bass sounds good but the other sounds horrible?
