DeMaio's Bass costs WHAT!!

Followed up on a direction from Atomic Al, another TB'er, in my DeMaio, of Manowar, bass inquiry of a few days ago.

Dawk Stillwell, who makes DeMaio's stuff, contacted me back and said in his email:

''JOEY'S'' THIN NECK CARBON FIBER BASSES COST OVER $20,000 USD EACH...

THE ONLY WAY IS TO GET AROUND THIS IT TO LOOK FOR A VINTAGE ''GIBSON'' (EB-3)...

ONLY BUY THE USA MADE VINTAGE OR THE REISSUE ''GIBSON'' (EB-3)... THERE ABOUT $2,000

KEEP AWAY FROM THE ''CHINESE'' CRAP THAT'S OUT THERE...

THEY LOOK GOOD,,, BUT THAT STUFF IS JUNK..."


Note: Yes, he misspelled "they're" which is a hot topic of English usage rant in the OT forum right now. And don't know why he ends sentences with 3 periods. ??? Nice guy, though, to respond to me.

But $20K each!----------:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

That's bizarre on more than one level. First, DeMaio's bass is not exactly a diamond-encrusted Ritter or an Alembic with 20 layers of prehistoric wood. Even the best carbon-fiber basses are under $6K. Secondly, the idea that the nearest thing is a Gibson EB3! DeMaio's carbon bass is based on his modified Ric, isn't it? I wouldn't say EB3 = Ric tone. I wonder if he only said that because it's the only thin-necked bass he knows about?

The EB3 comment would come from the fact that Stillwell installed an EB3 bridge pickup into Joey's original modified Ric. Unless the pics on his site are incorrect.

It also states he did the same to a 4001 for Roger Glover too.

I love manowar but I can't say I'd spend $20,000 to that bass tone.

Look,I'm REALLY embarrassed that I haven't heard of these basses that you all type about. I mean,I'd maybe be willing to bet a months pay that I would know about ANY brand of bass that ANYONE could name. No,I'm not braggin',I'm just a bass geek (like the other members of "THE BEST BASS FORUM!" Sooo......... Link,anyone?????

I've never heard of the bass maker or the band, to be honest. If he can really afford $20k basses, I guess I haven't been paying much attention to which bands are selling a lot of records lately.

Well Manowar are not hugely reknown in the states, They are massive in Europe and hold their own Festival with bands that are on the label they own. I don't think many bands have their own label let only festival so I don't money is that much of an issue with Manowar.

It's still the 80's, right? :D

I didn't realize that they had their own label- if that is successful enough, maybe that explains it.

But still no reason that it's $20k. Still not the worst I've heard ($40k for an Alembic is way way worse!), but that's a lot for that thing. And the tone is awful, imo!
