Demeter Club

Knob position is arbitrary and will vary per manufacturer, of course.

That being said, yes! This thing is hella-loud! I find it a bit "polite" in the mix, and the mids need to be boosted. I *think* Demeter considers flat to be mid 100%, bass/treble 0%. Someone check me on that.

From Demeter's website : The middle give 6dB of boost or cut at 500Hz (wide Q, peaking type)

So unless I don't understand how EQ's work (and that could very well be a possibility ;p), noon should be flat

Courtesy of the wonderful folks at Bass Gear magazine... (for the HBP1-800D anyway)

or, from Jim Demeter: brite off, treble 4, mid 10, bass 6, presence off, bass
switch 120.

Different EQ maybe for the VTBP?

I just don't get how you can have 6db of boost if flat is the mids turned all the way up - The only option is to turn the knob counter clockwise therefore cutting the mids... again, unless I don't undrstand how EQ's work.

That is actually pretty much how my HBP1-800D is set.

its really similar to how I have my HB600 set also. maybe a touch less miss and a bit of presence. But its an interesting EQ, and super effective given that "flat is not flat".

I am sure when I got it I used this article for the flat setting then only made minimal adjustments, I guess more to the parametric section, plus I am playing active basses with either Sadowsky or DG preamps.

I can tell you the sound I get with my AK Hathor and 5 String Headless 77 Spectorish bass just kills.

Captain Wally, great recording, and the Demeter sounds wonderful! Here is a single my band just released yesterday, that I tracked with the 201. The chain was an Ibanez SR650 (with those wonderful sounding Nordy Pickups), using it as a P-bass with just the neck pickup, to a 1st generation VTBP-201, into a BAE 1073 set flat, to a tube Pultec EQ with a very slight boost in the low mids, to a Empirical Distressor, then finally into the SSL console with the EQ's flat, letting the Demeter work its magic.

I normally use the Tech 21 Dug preamp pedal for everything with this band, but for the acoustic stuff, Demeter it is!

@Flowj Floored! That was excellent

Also, I guess I'm a member now. Just ordered a 1st gen (?) blackface from my friends in Seattle. Should be here this coming week. The VTBP-201 has been a bucket list pre for me for many moons. I remember trying one in conjunction with a Bag End ELF-M2 & about 1,200W of Crest Audio pushing thru a pair of Bag End 4x10's...

I'll update when it gets here, & will start hunting for a power amp. I've never done the seperate pre/power amp thing before, & am pretty stoked about a Demeter being my 1st go at it!

Cheers,
Keger

I haven't had too much time with the Minnie based amps, but IME with the VTBP and HBP amps and preamp, there is hardly a bad setting to be found. The EQ is a little subtle but so usable.

Which is exactly what you'd expect from a company steeped in making high quality studio bass pre amps.
Why waste time and money building in extreme range which just digs a big hole to fall in.

When bass players ask me to help with their sound (friends) a common theme is they have a graphic and preset switches and they've got themselves in quite a mess.
People think its all about mids but the only reason is because everyone else has hogged the sonic space.
People like Sadowsky and Demeter know bass sound and they dont overload mids.

Yeah totally. Some guys really like the ‘wow factor’ of dramatic eq capabilities but there’s just so much potential to butcher your sound and so much unusable range. That being said, my OG vtbp201 didn’t really offer enough control to wrangle weird rooms. These days I have enough tone shaping on my bass and pedalboard that i want to run the amp close to Flat anyways. But back then with no other tone control it did feel kinda hamstrung on certain gigs.

ps I also think that all of the usable pocket for bass is in the mids, and the Demeter’s native midrange voicing is just right for my tastes

I just scooped up a crest ca9 for my big gigs and am thinking about going with a Demeter pre, which would make my hb600 up for grabs… in case anyone is interested. They are super rare and sound phenomenal. Hmu!
The Crest Ca 9 is a fantastic amp for bass, BUT, if you sell the HA-600 is a incredible amp, I play one, and I believe that there were only about 20 made so if you sell it you will never have the chance to get another one. My wife might sell mine after I die, but then again she may keep that one!

Thank you Keger! A 201 was on my bucket list for years also, so glad you now have one, they are magical, will never get rid of mine…

It really is. just a phenomenal integrated amp. I'm a little reticent to sell it but we'll see. Depends on if I end up with a Dem preamp or something like a Millennia.
