The JJs are pretty clean. The original Edens carried those I believe...

The eq is pretty subtle, but the changes are there. I have found it's best to start with everything fully ccw and build the sound in each venue.
I plan on putting something NOS in there, probably some GE or Sylvania JANs, or maybe Mullards, but don't have any at the moment.
Of the tubes I keep around, I have an old, burned in Trace Elliot 12AX7 from the 90s that always sounds killer. No idea who made their tubes back in the day though.

I can imagine Lee's sound would really snarl underneath a full ensemble with drums, especially in conjunction with smart use of a passive tone control on the bass.

Thinking more about the EQ, the boost/cut is relatively modest compared to most modern amps (yes, I am looking at you, Tonehammer et al.) so I really do think this amp is all about building your tone. I love it.
Oh, I meant to mention I had the tone knob all the way up on the bass, but you could probably guess that.

Let's hope more amp builders follow demeter's lead regarding the dynamic range of the eq. A full sweep at +|- 6 dB is a great tool to really dial in a sound, rather than only having 10% of a pot be useful (I'm looking at you, Puma taste knob, Eden, Ag tone hammer, T-Funk Timbre knob, and basically everyone else).
this is your experience with the Taste knob with your bass and your cab. someone with a different rig may be going farther and farther away from noon to get what they are after. perhaps someone with a variety of basses may find the entire range useful.
The taste knob on my old Powersoft Puma1000 was very powerful. I'm not sure where the 10% claim comes from, unless it's specific to the current ICE models.

I guess Walbassist and Greenrositti are saying that (for example) the Puma's controls are so powerful that only 10% of its range is useful, as opposed to the Demeters more 'gentle' EQ where the entire range is useful and musical. I had 3 different Demeter pre's and liked them all but was only able to use the HBP-1 due to the parametric EQ's ability to actually affect the sound and function like I need an EQ to, since I use a variety of basses and cabs, in all kinds of settings.
The Demeter's sound great, as long as you don't need to do a fair bit of sculpting or carving of your sound for any reason. The Demeter pre's seem to function more like an SVT (or a streamliner for that matter) in that they have a much more forgiving range of usability in their eq settings, at the expense of powerful tone shaping.
Personally, I feel more comfortable with lots of control, even if I only have to use a relatively small range (usually 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock max) of it.

Eq?? We don't need no stinkin' eq.
The 201 is definitely minimalist, but that is much of what I like about it. I don't switch instruments much and the onboard pre on my primary bass has enough eq to go from P sound to J sound with a quick twist.
The 201 just gets out of your way and makes a great clean bass tone.
I can understand how that doesn't work for everyone though.

It's a nice tone and the kind of tone I strive for. I love the form factor of this amp. I am definitely getting one.
I think this amp sounds great. I've always loved the old Demeter pres. I never need eq on an amp....almost always run flat if an amp is naturally voiced. For traveling I think something like the Glockenklang digital amps would be better for me, but I'm super impressed to see that Demeter came up with this. Would love to have one in the future. Beautifully done.
