Describe your bass tone!

There are two tones. One is like Nathan East's tone on "Yah Moh Be there", which is like a catch-all tone to fit like 71% of the music I play. The other tone is a treble-heavy poppin' and slappin', kind of like Tetsuo Sakurai's tone on "Domino Line".

I don't have the gear to replicate the tones I just described. Actual tone vs. desired tone is world's apart.

An angry, pissed-off old Moog, with a lil' bit of StingRay pick grind still in the mix.

If I had to cut all my (admittedly few) pedals? Growly fingerstyle, tone at full. Sounds awesome on a S.U.B., love mine to death.

The tone I'm hoping to accomplish at some point: Echoey, deep and slightly muted synth tone. Limited usefulness, I know, but I want my bass to sound like a ghost! BOO!

Right now, it's kind of like what an Emu's wet fart would sound like when combined with someone striking a wiffleball bat against a damp log. It's a Squier VMJazz5. I am borrowing a friends Geddy Lee though and that sounds like a bathroom at a ballet if Al Pacino suddenly had a coughing fit on the pooper.

Nothing special, I've easily accomplished both of those tones by running my bass through a talkbox as I'm making vague, overwrought descriptions of my tone through it. :bassist:

I growl down low, and sing in the mids. highs I just like to be natural (: and hrmm... I focus on slightly off center pickup blends cause I like having input from both pups, but hate the frecquency cancellation issue when they're at equal volume...

A meaty growl.

Rickenbacker 4003 just the bridge pick up through a sans amp into my ampeg svt 4 pro and out of my ampeg heritage 810

Plenty of mids. Enough lows. And enough highs. And an ample amount if gain.

I get a lot of compliments and sit just right in my bands mix so I must be doing something right.

Pre-EB 'Ray through a VT Bass pedal as a preamp ... warm but present and thick. Turn the bass all the way up for reggae, keep the highs reigned in unless slapping, sometimes push them a bit and attack the strings hard for that early Jack Casady sound.

Mostly j bass tones. My signature fingerstyle tone is with both pickups on full with no boosted frequencies (other than the amplifier controls). I'm a big proponent of using fingers to get the tone. If I'm doing any thumb work I like to go in humbucker mode then roll back the bridge pickup a smidge for some more P-ish bark. This is when the onboard comes in handy, and it also work great for a more raw fingerstyle tone.

The bass I'm using allows me almost unlimited access to whatever kind of J bass sound I want, vintage or modern.
