I think not many guys do that. I try to get a tone similar to that which was originally recorded. Usually I can get most of the desired tone by just moving the blend knob. Maybe a touch of bass boost now and then.

I think not many guys do that. I try to get a tone similar to that which was originally recorded. Usually I can get most of the desired tone by just moving the blend knob. Maybe a touch of bass boost now and then.
Well I used to be a one sound all the time guy and that's perfectly valid, but now I have fun changing things up, sometimes radically. Even adding treble when I slap sometimes now
Warm, fairly round but with good mids, highs slightly attenuated. On my 'grit' setting the bass is a touch lower, the highs are flat, and there is some grit. But not a whole lot of difference. For reggae take the basic sound and further cut the highs and boost the lows, using either or both the voicing filters on my ShuttleMax and the on board EQ on my bass. Hmm, not that interesting to read, really, is it?
+1. Pickup selection and technique are the most efficient ways to get dramatic changes in tone and character. One of my gigs is a "high level variety band"(I use quotes and say "high level" because we get paid well, not because it's artistically at a high level). I have to go from Brown Eyed Girl to Billy Jean to Beatles to Billy Idol to Billy Joel to Beyonce to Brian Adams all in the same set....and that's just "the B's".

I've always been a huge fan of Ric Fierabracci's tone, especially on his work with Yanni. Comes from his Pedulla and UA hardware. Sometimes I get close.
Deftly articulate with a full-bodied bouquet of tasty liquid thud twang slap clank thump over a foundation of earthy wooden solidity topped by a tastefully distorted (yet never incongruous) upper 1.899265341135 kHz sandwiching a mid-range of articulate, literate melody hinting towards a futuristic inchoate spirit vibe yet never losing connection with it's solid retro roots.

Fat, dark, warm, punchy, airy. Occasionally at the end of the set I'll open up the tone knob and play more aggressively to get a nice mellow sort of distortion. Still a tiny bit clangy but not much.

I would describe my bass tone as innocent as a baby, yet dark like a devil punching that baby in the face!
Mid heavy with a particular boost in the low-mids, treble turned all the way down, and just enough bass get some rumble going but not cause an earthquake and I play over the bridge pickup. I quite like it because no matter how I set my tone knob or pickup volumes I always have (to me) the perfect level of distortion without the need of a distortion pedal

Old school: thumpy, bassy and clean.
I choice these depending on what I need.
1-P-Bass / Flats.
2-Jazz Bass / rounds.
3-Fretless Wal / Flats.
4-Fretless Jazz / Rounds.
I run my basses through Schroeder cabs, and tube heads.

Depends on the song. Sometimes it punchy, somewhat like Marcus Miller but with more bottom end and SVT growl. Other times its more like John Deacon or Boz Burrell. Really depends on the song. I generally like tone with a fat full sounding bottom but at the same time having the punch and clarity of Marcus.
