growl and thump are depends on what amp I using on the stage (I don't have a good amp)
some notes are "clicked", zingy low-to-high end, sometimes lack of low end

also vintage & modern in a bass

Fingerstyle=low mid punch in your face
Slap is typical piano sounding hammer ons, scooped mids, crisp highs. not as extreme as Marcus. Still that sound of brand new SS DR Highbeams with a very percussive slap sound. Old school slap like Louis Johnson and Larry Graham.

Being very eclectic I like them ALL depending - from the OP's scoopy hifi to ballsy snAAArling mids to thick creamy lows with nary a hint of top or even mids. Plus everything else along the spectrum.

I always say that I go for a 'vintage modern' sound with my tone. I play a Schecter 5 through an Acoustic B200H with a 15. I EQ a slight mid scoop with the gain about half-way up which give me good bite when I dig in but nice and smooth when I back off. I'm not crazy about the overly grindy tone that some people are fond of nowadays, or that über-mellow tone that some like.

I'm just getting back into my bass playing after a long time away, but I favor a pretty aggressive, snarly Geddy Lee kind of tone. Not exact, since I'm not him and he's not me, but similar. I tend to use some chorus, sometimes a hint of overdrive, and past that I attack the strings pretty hard with my fingers. Rarely use a pick.

And I'm using a modified Jazz bass, for that mid-range punch.
