Describe your bass tone!

Simple. Bright, agressive, ballsy, growly. Think of a set of SS rounds with bumped mids and flat bass and treble. Played really freaking hard. Or not for a softer sound.

I love dynamics. And my hands kill for dynamics

How wold you describe your tone? and what are some of the key factors to get it?

I go first, I'll define my tone:
Very articulate and mostly scooped out of the midrange, with prominent lows and highs.
The low end is warm, deep and tight and the highs are very bright and zingy.
I think most of the tone comes from my stainless strings, solid state amp and active electronics.

That was my tone years ago. After reading repeated admonitions here against scooped mids when in a mix, I moved to a more mid-rich, barky kind of J bass tone. I may have gone too far in that direction, so lately I've been trying to get used to using more "vintagey" tones where appropriate, so more bottom, less top. Ultimately, I like a tone that is pretty even across the frequencies, favoring the bridge pickup slightly. If I were playing jazz, I might scoop it a little bit.

I'm not a fan of that kind of "tubular" P-bassish tone you get on the neck pickup. I can tolerate it with the bass turned up and mids neutral. That's good for Beatles music and the like. My last couple basses are really versatile, and I want to get some mileage out of that.
