Determining which prongs on TRS input are tip, ring and sleeve

Hi all,

A few weeks ago, I bought an Ibanez GSR205 (this model specifically.) I'm replacing the stock electronics with a Tone Monster SBK-2D. I've run into a problem: I can't determine which prongs on the input jack are tip, ring and sleeve, respectively. I just got off the phone with Hoshino HQ who sent me a wiring diagram which, alas, also doesn't specify the info I'm looking for.

Someone posted a wiring diagram for this bass on here back in 2012, but it's for the single coil version whereas mine has passive soapbar humbuckers.

Working from the diagram detail I've included, can anyone here aid me in answering my query? Also including a photo of the jack itself.

Use a TRS cable and multimeter/continuity tester. Plug one end of a TRS cable into the jack, then use the multimeter to see which tabs have continuity to the T/R/S on the other plug?

does it matter?

in the pre-amp circuits i have seen, the ground is connected to the sleeve and the battery (-) to the ring. guitar output on the tip. an instrument cable is T/S, no ring so when you insert the cable, it shorts the ring and sleeve to complete the circuit. at this point, they are electrically the same. so, if the ground was on the sleeve and the (-) on the ring, would it matter from an electrical standpoint?
unless you are running a stereo set up, the ring and sleeve should not matter.

in any case, you should be able to remove the jack and look at the connections to determine which is which. if not, then a TRS cable and a multimeter (continuity tester/ohm meter...), as WRM suggested, would be the way to go.

well, some wireless systems work only when the - is on the ring, but not on sleeve. I had a Line6 G10 that behaved like this.

I did not consider that a wireless system might be different.
