Double Bass Detroit (here we go again)

The DSO seems to have an issue with hiring just bassists- the last time this happened they didn't have a music director- now that Slatkin is there there should be no issue. It especially makes sense since they just hired a bunch of new musicians, including a new concertmaster, principal flute, principal trumpet, and a smattering of other section players.

The worst part is, they also have a section opening (left by Rick Robinson resigning). Hopefully that doesn't take five auditions to fill as well.

Boris Astafiev, Ru Fung, Colin Corner, Ted Merritt, Brendan Kane and Meridith Johnson where in the semi finals and no one advanced to the final round?! Give me a break...:spit:

I think that if Detroit will not even advance one of these allstar players through to a final round, they will have serious problems finding someone better that will want this gig. They are not the same orchestra they were before the last principal audition. They are unfortunately worse off economically and dare I say it, many of their great players have left for other gigs. They are not the same orchestra they were when they had 5 different auditions and the fact that they are not willing to give any of these candidates a try blows my mind.

It could be something with the management as mentioned before, but if that is the case then god help them with Ann Parsons at the helm. I hope they had a good reason for holding yet another "no-hire" audition. What are they waiting for, OMG!

Not sure what everyone else deems an "all-star" but the fact is people have bad days. Even exceptions to the game, like Mr. Hanna, got passed up by Cleveland a couple of years ago and Chicago, the first time around. I wasn't there, but maybe he wasn't 100%?

If I am not mistaken, the DSO will be entering the last year of their contract following the strike. Heck, maybe Steve Molina is fine with continuing to stand principal and hire out the other spots. Not sure if anyone has seen the broadcasts but they weren't rocking an 8 member section often, if at all.

No matter the speculation brought to light by contributors to these forums, you can darn well bet that whatever the reason was, it will not be found here.

Peace, from Moncton

Ms Parsons has no say on artistic matters like hiring players, from what I understand. That would be under the control of maestro Slatkin, Steve Molina, and the rest of the comittee.

It is entirely possible they didn't like anyone that day- they can be as picky as they want. And despite having a lower salary, the orchestra is actually better off financially, having negotiated paying off the outstanding debt on their hall- if they were in worse financial straits, try wouldn't be able to hire about a dozen musicians.
