so i've recently decided to detune all my strings from EADG to DGCF because i'd rather not spend extra money and get a 5 string...are there any other bassists out there that use this set up, and how do you find it?

detuning all my strings

I tune to c# for one of my bands so i have a few of my basses strung up with 105-50s (i normally go 95s) other than floppier strings there's no issue. Timmy Commerford has some 4 strings tune BEAD (bottom 4 of a 5 string) which is another option for you
er not sure what down tuning a whole step into d standard has to do with not spending extra money to not play a 5 string man...as far as down tuning goes you should have decent string tension with standard gauge strings at d standard but once you start going below there youre probably gonna want heavier gauge strings and have your bass setup appropriately
but yeah i occasionally play in d standard and its fun get a bit different tones and i find playing in d is a lot more fun in d standard then drop d personally

thats funny because it was the RATM song take the power back which prompted me to do that because i needed the Low D to play it, and it got a bit confusing with the other strings...haha
Down tuning is fine, I would rather drop all of my strings than just one. Depending on feel you may want to go to a heavir string set,105-50 / 110-55 or somthing of that nature. There may be some minor seup issues like the truss and action adjustments needed, though.

Whatever tension the strings are at, I just work with it. I find that the construction of the bass and the setup, to me, have more of an effect on a bass than just the string gauge alone.

I believe Take the Power Back is just slapped in Drop D, don't need to downtune everything. At least thats how I play it and it sounds spot on.
yea...i know, but for regular playing, the intervals are all off for my hand positions, so i'd rather keep the intervals and just move everything
