Devout "SVT'ist" wants to go lighter..

Ok, I have searched and read a wealth of comparisons on the lighter amps coming out of the woodwork today but I just want to kick up a discussion on my options, sorry if this is redundant....

I have been playing a Tech21 Landmark 600 for years (Basically Bass Driver and RPM Pre in a 600 watt 2 channel head), first through an Ampeg fridge, then as of last year I switched it up to a lighter smaller Berg NV610. Well now the lighter smaller amp market has peaked my interest but I have limited access to try most of them out for myself. The new amp does not have to be "SVT" like in any way, I played with that "woofy" sound for so long that I want to explore new bass amp territory anyhow. I basically want a good match for the NV610 cab that will play well with a Sansamp Bass Driver stuck in front of it if I want to get my old SVT sound for some songs if need be. FWIW, I really don't fool much with EQ, I prefer to "set it and forget it".......I see so many new powerful lightweight heads on the market now that my head starts to spin, they all seem good to me. Judging from the clips I have heard around here I think I like Thunderfunk, I think I like Markbass, I think I like Genz......Oh I think I am thinking to much, what do you think?

Nah, I typed that meaning the "SVT/Ampeg 810 sound" that is pretty much the sound that I have used, it is one of the sounds the LM 600 head is based on. I used a SVTIII then an SVT4 before I picked up the LM 600 about 5 years ago. I just felt typing "Devout LM 600 user" would have been very vague. I still love this head but science proves that there is a direct correlation between your age and the weight of the gear you are willing to travel with. It would also just be nice to try a new head out.

You really need to check out the Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0. I went from Eden to Genz, play the same set up and lost 120 Lbs... of gear... The head sounds great!! See if you can test drive one... you wont be sorry.

Awww c'mon now don't be mad because I like the Ampeg sound but don't like the weight usually associated with it anymore. Technology has it's upside too my friend, would you believe they have these special ovens that cook things like baked potatoes & popcorn in under 5 minutes now? I even heard they are coming out with these telephones with no cords attached to them too!!!:p

I'm with you. It must be the soft life these young guys lead. :hmm: I like technology and I'm a geezer, but no little box is going to sound like an SVT. If you don't like the SVT sound, thats cool, but if you do like that sound, don't try to convince people that your Sansamp (or equivalent) is going to deliver the same goods.

I'm beginning to think bass players in general are weaklings. I'll gladly lug the SVT anywhere (im 33). What is the difference between a 60lb and 90lbs head???? Its the 8x10 thats akward to move.

Have you ever lifted a twin reverb? Thats heavier than a SVT head (or it feels like it anyway)!!

Soo muchh bellyaching around here! Like Luckydog said...If you dont like the "real" SVT sound, no big deal. Quit comparing simulators with the real deal please.

Part of it may be the fear that if one "review" says it sounds different from a conventional power supply, then the designer can kiss his aspirations goodbye.

I had a feeling the purists were gonna get all riled up when I was initially typing this thread.......I'll stop comparing the sound of the LM600 to the sound of an SVT after I borrow my buddies vintage SVT stack and record a bunch of tracks using the SVT for some and my LM600 for others, post it up here with a which one is which quiz and you naysayers peg each one to their corresponding amps. I already blew my buddy away with the similarity when we shared a rehearsal space & he is a P-bass-->SVT-->810 guy. Period. I never said I wanted a lightweight replacement amp that sounded like an SVT either, read my first post. One last thing, I'm not & never did say the LM600 is an SVT. It's an SVT killer.:ninja:

Maybe a svp pro/cl with a light power amp? The samamp preamp i have is based on a bassman.......

I hope your back stays healthy. Mine has three herniated degenerative disks.
