Devout "SVT'ist" wants to go lighter..

Whatever. Recording clips on a computer isnt a real comparison. Playing one in a live band situation is. Nobody is going to change their mind based on a sound clip. Period. Sorry to derail your post. Good luck with your SVT killer.

Denton, I just want to go on record saying that the SVT killer comment was merely busting balls & believe me if I had the disposable income I would certainly own a vintage SVT along with my other gear, I am not bashing them in any way. I even believe they are the bar that almost every other amp manufacturer tries to hurdle to this day. I was merely asking opinions on the newer amp manufacturers out there because I am interested in the advances of technology that is all.

That goodness someone finally said this. I'm tired of hearing about recordings being the ultimate test of any opinion one might have about an amp or cab.

No disrespect to the OP, and this comment isn't really even aimed at this thread, which has a lot of useful info about the real world situations.

Disclaimer: I'm no tube snob either, and I happily use various kinds of amps at different times; there are so many ways to sound good these days. But the feel and effortless presence of a well running tube amp has its very own particular charm and I'm glad I own one that can give me cleanish to dirty without touching a knob on my bass or on the amp.

You can get a recording to sound the same whether your using tubes or solid state because of the volumes and frequencies involved in recording. When you play live a tube amp sound better, period. Anyone who says otherwise is a delusional idiot. Lots of bass players spend tons of money on high end SS gear and then try to defend their purchases on this message board. The truth is that an all tube SVT sounds better than any other amp on the planet. This is an indisputable fact. Some bass players think that it's subjective, that each person can decide for themselves what the best bass sound is. That's bull. Bass is supposed to sound a certain way - it's a supporting instrument. The SVT produces a sound that sits better in the mix than any other amp that ever has been made or ever will be made. That's why all the pros use it. Any professional bass player that doesn't play an SVT isn't very good. They are probably in a one hit wonder band. Want more proof? Most black bass players use SVTs. We all know that they have more soul and groove than anyone else. Personally I don't know why all these other amp manufacturers exist. It just goes to show how stupid most people are. I had A GBE 750 for a short while and it sounded great alone and with my sansamp up front. I've heard the new Shuttle 6.0 sounds somewhat similar to the GBE 750, so that might be a good way to go. It should handle all your requirements from the original post: lightweight, sounds a little different, and plays well with a sansamp when you want it to.

Admittedly, I am an oddball, but I would change my mind based on some real measured waveforms that I can analyze. There must be enough engineers who own SVT's, that one of them has probably looked at the output on an oscilloscope. It would not convince everybody, but maybe fellow engineers would appreciate the results.

Of course, real waveforms might also tempt me to emulate the effects rather than buying a real tube head.

In OP response. As others 've said a decent light power amp & tech 21 Pre....
My LMII works well with a S.A.Bass Driver thru my NV610 & Is PLENTY loud enough too! Light, small.. sounds good w/ EQ flat & can adjust the 2 filters a touch for an ":old Sch." sound-or whatever!

While my main amp is a late 70's SVT, I am looking into getting a LMII paired with a Sansamp(or the new VT) as a backup. The Tech 21 stuff cannot match the classic SVT sound but in my mind it sounds pretty good as a substitute.

As it is now I use the Sansamp to run through the PA and send the parallel out to the SVT for stage sound and get good results with that mix
