We all know that they have more soul and groove than anyone else. Personally I don't know why all these other amp manufacturers exist. It just goes to show how stupid most people are. Nothing sounds as good as an SVT - trust me I know better than anyone - but people still buy inferior amps and try to say that the sound good! It's unbelievable! The whole "technology" debate is stupid too. People still play the same violins that they played hundreds of years ago - nobody's trying to sell you a solid state digital violin are they? Anyway, unless you're a complete moron I'm sure that you'll be posting your current inferior amp on ebay or cragslist today and going out and buying an SVT. Afterall, the genuine SVT sound that can only be replicated by a true ampeg svt all tube amp is what every listener on the planet wants to hear and you owe it to them to deliver the best bass sound in the world.

I own a 1978 SVT and 810 stack that I've had for 25 years. I used to use it alot back in the 1980s when most bar gigs in my city were mon-sat (6 days). In the last 10 years the gigs are now one or two nights and not worth moving the monster stack. Because of the weight it sits in ny practice room and I occasionally use it for practicing at home.

I also have a LM II and Sansamp RBI that I use with a SWR Goliath II. It is light weight, loud and has a great tone. I am using the Sansamp RBI less and less as I am loving the LM II tone on it's own. The only thing I'm thinking about changing is the speaker cabinet as it is 80 lbs and getting old. I tried a 410 epifani and it sounded great but Winnipeg doesn't have them.

Yes. Sad times these days. I made a great living of about $500 a week after expenses in the early 70's playing 5 or 6 nights a week for weeks on end, pretty much as as often as I wished.

OMG, $500 US in 1972 dollars is $2591 US in 2008. If I had worked 40 weeks a year, that's would have been an annual income of about $112,000 US in 2008 dollars!

I also have a LM II and Sansamp RBI that I use with a SWR Goliath II. It is light weight, loud and has a great tone. I'm going out on a limb here with my opinions, please don't take it personally. This is my opinion, and I'm entitled to it .

I'm not a big fan of the SVT sound. I can understand appreciation for a tried and true sound, but I also believe that gear is constantly evolving and better sounds can be had. I believe that a lot of the love for the SVT and vintage tube amps is that they sound... lo-fi. I can dig saturation and warmth sometimes, but not all drive all the time. Sometimes I like my frequencies to come through... UNCLIPPED! The SVT is praised because at certain volumes it doesn't accurately reproduce the sound of the bass, it smashes it and drives it and makes it dirty. Sometimes that sounds great, sometimes I don't want to touch that sound with a 10 foot pole.

I also believe that at least some part of the SVT love comes from the aesthetics of it all... I will go out and say that I hate the 810 cab, specifically the ampeg 810. But it looks badass. Who wouldn't want a speaker cab that iconic and big behind them? I want big size behind me, but I prefer a different sound.

For the OP: I think the LMII would be good for what you're describing. It sounds like whatever you put into it and doesn't impart much color of it's own. That's why I'd stay away from some of the other choices. Nail the sound you want with your bass and effects, then run it in to the LMII and it will reproduce it accurately. I got the most convincing SVT sound with my EBS multi-drive on the tube-sim setting. I can play it with the same grit at any volume (Don't have to crank it to get the tone) and I can play completely clean at loud volumes. For me, this is much more flexible and a lot more practical than an SVT.

In my case you are spot on. I play out on average no more than twice a month and this keeps the SVT humping from getting old.

I look at playing through my big tube rig as an luxury and indulgence, like driving a nice sports car. At least I can take more passengers along: my bandmates love it and so do our audience, it seems.

I can't believe people are still taking Ace's post seriously, as it is dripping with irony and is a perfect argument against tone fascism in one of its most common guises.
