MXR M-80 di + has been a steady for me. You don't have to engage the effects to use it as a DI. Truth is the dirt side is pretty lame, but can be used as just a boost.
I use it as a pre amp, with the color button on, to warm up the tone going into the amp head. It gives a nice "spacious" slightly scooped, warm tone. This was really cool with my Fender Jazz.
I used it this weekend at a outdoor gig that had backline, so all I needed was the M-80, my bass, and cords. I got exactly the sound I expected out of an amp I'd never seen before. Takes all the mystery out of it. Di out to FOH board.
I kept this $100 box over the Alembic F-2B pre. I've seen em go for $50 used, and they are built like a tank.
