DI for a Fender Jazz

Hey guys just a question, I usually play with a small amplifier, and a behringer di straight to the mixer,
can you suggest any good DI boxes to replace the behringer? I played with them last time it sounded a bit muddy..

how about Boss active DI?

Hi, I have a Jazz Bass. I often use a Samson S-Direct active DI box and it sounds fine. A couple of times I happened to use a friend's BSS AR133 box and it seemed to me it sounded a little bit better, but that was with another soundguy, so I'll be unable to tell if that was the soundguy, the DI box, or both.

Anyway, going active DI box is the right way, IMO.

I've personally have owned the MXR Bass DI (M80) and Tech21 Sansamp BDDI. Both pedals do distortion as a bonus but they both work great for DI. If you like the distortion sound, then the Sansamp BDDI would be the best option IMO. Either way, both can be found for around $100 used. I also really like the preamp portion of the Sansamp as it gives me way more control of treble and bass than my Ampeg amp does.

They aren't $40 like the Samson mentioned above, but they have more controls and offer however much distortion you want.

I tried Behringer BDI21, sans amp Bass Driver, they're great pedals/stompboxes but I wanted an active direct box that doesn't really add a color to my sound, something like an alternate to a RED DI, its way too expensive for me...

by the way my bass is just a Fender Jazz with passive Fender pickups

Don't remember that the SansAmp BDDI, the MXR M80, the Behringer BDI21, etc., are preamps with a direct injection feature in them.

Giving distorsion has NEVER been the main function of a DI box. Its function is to balance the output.

Neither has it ever been to add treble or bass to one's tone.

If we're talking DI, well... let's talk DI then.

yeah.. oh by the way.. regarding the di issue... since we're setting up like

Bass >> DI >> mixer >> monitor...

do u think its better to add a little graphic eq pedal? since i want to keep the sound clear, not dark like the sansamp colors the tone making it sound more like active..

I personally don't, but I must admit I have a VT Bass between the bass and the DI these days. Helps me get "that" SVT tone.

About EQ, many soundguys prefer having the "dry" signal from the bass. But many others prefer having the tone shaped before the DI.

So all this depends :

- on the PA equipment,
- on the soundguy,
- on the tone you have to send,
- on the EQ,
- on the way you use all this.

i guess some soundguys here just boost the output leaving eq flat, so i'll most probably set the eq before passing the di

I use a countryman DI. I run an SVT-CL into a DI, then out of the DI into an 810 cab.

Bass >> di >> mixer >> monitors
>> amp

i don't usually care much about the amplifier since the equipment provided to us are well.. lacking esp in bass..

No need to be sorry man!! I put it in line from the head to the cab. ei) The output from the head into the instrument of the DI, then from the out of the DI into the cab.

This means you can only use jack cables, correct ?
Are they shielded or not ?

by the way are Whirlwind Hotbox good for passive basses? anyone tried them yet?

I had someone make cables for me. Speakon on one end and 1/4 on the other. The speakon end goes into the head and cab, the 1/4 goes into the DI.

If you want tone shaping, maybe a SansAmp or Sadowsky.

i have a countryman type 85 but i switched to a tech 21 british pedal with a mod for more low end because if i don't do the tone shaping i want, the soundman will screw me with too much high end every time. soon the british will be replaced for a di with a tech 21 vt deluxe.

honestly, though, i prefer a mic, but i fly a lot and don't always get the amp i want (svt/810e), so i di most of the time.
