No love for the Countryman type 85? Works great with a P bass... although I personally find it works better with phantom power than battery.

Tech 21 BDDI, PDDI or VT Bass DI for a nice amp/cab sim flavor - this is what they were designed for, and they're affordable and reliable. Aguilar Tone Hammer for clean to nicely flavored tone - not really an amp/cab simulator, but it can do a lot of what the Tech 21 pedals do for a reasonable price IME. For a straight DI, it's hard to beat the Radial JDI or Countryman 85 assuming you don't need any tone shaping or gain boost. I'll give a quick mention to the Dunlop MXR M80 and M81 for nice clean DI's with other features/tone shaping options.
I carry a Radial J48 with me for all gigs & use it with both active & passive bases. It needs phantom power from the PA, but I've never found a PA that couldn't give it to me, & I prefer not to have to mess with batteries.
