DI volume on Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0

This may be a dumb question, but does the DI output level from the Shuttle 6.0 change when I change the master volume on the amp? I have been running a Radial Bassbone as a Di, then taking that signal to the amp. Last week I tried taking the signal direct from the Shuttle DI and I couldn't get my stage volume loud enough without having the sound man tell me to turn down because it was too hot from the stage. When I went back to using the Bone, no problem.

If you run it pre-EQ, then your Master Volume settings should have no effect on the signal sent to the DI. If you run it post-EQ, I believe the Master Volume still has no effect on the DI, but any changes you make in the EQ (boosting/cutting, global filters) will go to the DI, which can impact the DI. For example, boosting everything without adjusting your master volume would likely send a hotter signal to the DI.

But, AFAIK, on the Genz heads I've used, the master volume has nothing to do with the DI signal. On my GBE600, I can turn my master volume all the way down and still send a signal to the board. I can only kill the DI with the mute switch. On a head like the Shuttle, without a DI Level control, you can only adjust the output to the DI by running it post-EQ and boosting or cutting with the EQ or global filters. I'm sure that agedhorse or hasbeen will be along shortly to correct me if I've given any incorrect information.

It may change only when in the post-eq, position (I'll have to double-check, don't have my paperwork with me) definately not in the pre-eq position. Were you set for mic or line level output on the back of the amp? Pro consoles won't have a problem with post eq line level outputs but the lower level consoles may. In that case, use the mic level output.

MASTER volume will have NO effect over DI out..
Check to see if your DI is in PRe or POST setting.. Also if you are sending a real hot signal and your DI is set to PRE.. then check to see if the other switch near the XLR is set to Mic and Line. Line out is hotter than Mic.

If your DI is set to POST Eq setting whatever you do with your gain knobs and EQ will affect the DI out...

EDIT Agedhorse you beat me to the Enter key..

Agedhorse,

Which setting would be better to use as a default choice? Line or Mic level? What reasons/scenarios would you choose one over the other? Looking to move on to a Shuttle 6.0 from my GBE600 and trying to get to know the equipment as much as possible before taking the leap.

(it seems from your post that Mic level would be the better choice as a rule, but I guess I would just like some clarification on why that is so. Thanks for having a presence on TB!)

Generally, the mic position would be a better choice unless you were using a pro console. Since many of our products are used by pro players touring with pro grade systems, we included real line level outputs for them.

I just double-checked the paperwork, and the post-eq direct out is pre master volume control and post-insert point so that your inserted processing is picked up by the post DI out.

I appologize for my initial lack of clarity here, I am trying to keep straight the details on a lot of different models and it's easy to confuse details like this across product lines.

Thanks for all the help. I Was running pre-EQ, mic level. It could have been that there was a differrent sound guy on last week. This was in a church with pro level board, etc. We have three sound men and each one has his idea of what the level should be. The one last week tends to run everything hot, but it puzzles me why he wanted my stage volume to come down when using the Shuttle DI. I went back to the Tonebone on Sunday and he didn't say a word. It just kills me that in a two-guitar and keyboard band with loud acoustic drums, everything put through the system, people tell me to turn down when I can't hear myself if I get more than two feet from my cabinets. Maybe I'm deaf after 40 years of standing next to crash cymbals.

The mic level output is compatable with 100% of all consoles that have been on the market in the last 30 years. There must have been confusion by the sound guy. Suggest to them that they spend a little quality time with the console's owner's manual and a study guide. Everybody will benefit.

Oh, how I Agree. We had one sound man for almost eight years, then they imported three newbies and I don't think they were well-trained. When the old sound guy is on, everything is like clockwork. When he isn't there, the monitors are so loud that I can hear everything BUT my bass, and the wedges are 15 feet in front of me. I should mention that we did a TV broadcast last month and I ran the Shuttle DI to the studio board and it sounded amazing on playback -- using a Lakland 55-94. Love GB bass amps -- this is my third one.

Thanks for the info
I had the same problem this past Sunday while on prasie team. The sound guy works in radio and gets really uptight when he feels the signal coming to the board is to hot. He loved the sound of my rig, but said he did not have control of the signal. I looked on the back and saw the line/mic, but was not sure what it does so we left well enough alone.
So now I know that I can make the switch and it will work for most all of my apps.
This is my first GB and I believe I have purchased my last rig!
I run a 6.0 with 2x12T cabs. I have 3 basses a G&L L2500 frettted/G&L L2500 frettless/Michael Kelly Culb Custom 5. My G&Ls have the actives removes to give me pickup controls for each PU for coil tapping. I love the GB because it is the first rig since my Padded Kustom back in 66 that is easy to dial in. I run it mostly flat so what we hear is just my G&Ls
Thanks GB for a great product!
Mike

Sorry for waking this zombie up but I couldn´t find anything closer in TB: this weekend I played a gig with my bass connected to a PodGo and this one connected to my Genz Benz shuttlemax 9.2 Master loop return, and Direct Out didn´t send any signal to console at all. I finally had to use the Instrument Input. Reading this post may I take that I need to set it "post eq" instead of "pre eq" to be able to use Direct Out with loop return?
Thanks in advance and let me know if you need more info or anything is not clear.

You may have to try it to find out if it will work I suggest you connect your bass to the instrument input on your Shuttlemax and then connect your Podgo in the normal manner to the effects loop using the send and return. I suspect that the return on the effects loop will not send a signal to the DI output. Good luck. Please let us know what you find out.

I don´t use PodGo in the loop, only half. I just connect it to the amp´s return. Anyway as I don´t have any console to check the D.I. out I may try if it works directly to a powered FRFR cab I have at home, so I can do some tests to learn how the amp works as I never used these routes before.

[edit after checking the docs] The effects return is before the DI, in POST EQ mode, the DI on the amp will work for your needs.

I just did the test with the amp and can confirm: effect loop sends the signal to DI Out if EQ is selected post, it won´t send anything in pre position. Ah and also tried that Master volume won´t make any effect in DI out, no matter pre or post.
Thanks for your tips!
